If you are in film 4GB of RAM is minimum spec for a new computer. 8GB is recommended and if you could go higher I would, but for most boards it is not economically feasible.
I cannot find anything about on board RAID on this board, please someone correct me. However, if you do not plan on setting up any raid (which you may want to do if you are editing video) this board may not be the best choice, if RAID is supported I will shut up and drop this.
8800GT should do just fine and it is really easy to install, and get working.
As for the processor get a quad core if you can afford it otherwise I have seen the E7300s for not much more than 7200 around $25 or so see if you can swing your budget in such away.

Get the most powerful cpu you can, editing anything takes a lot, that goes for ram too. RAID might be better as an external hd. Power supply - google computer power supply calculator and you should be able to get a good calculator. Then add at least 20% and you should be fine.

if you can run osx successfully on this system then fcp and it's other production apps should run fine and stable.
you don't need raid unless you're working on 2k dpx files (i'm assuming you are working on either standard def dv or hdv or hd via a panasonic p2 or equivalent).

just message me if you run into trouble. am editing offline hd on an E4600 with 2gigs of ram and no raid.

wasalam.

This is a nice hardware choices to run Leopard :
  • No problems with Gigabyte EP45 (you'll find a lot of posts that have installation guides etc).
  • Core processor is very good with mac no problems also.
  • I think that your GeForce 8600 will work.
  • The other components have no problems.
you can install from Leopard retail (original DVD) without any problems.

Yes, I was talking about compatibly with OS X and this hardware is great.

I must warn you about 4GB+ ram usage all weird kind of errors can come from running with 4+ GB's
if you go for more ram You must remember 1 thing you have to enable the memory remap in the bios setup!
this sets the ram to 64 bits.

Second you heard it befor go for a Q6600 there real cheap quadcore processors and if you ad a good cooler you can easyly over clock to 3GHZ with no trouble

3th it does not matter what speed ram you get DDr2 800 is cheap and fast. faster ram only gets you max 5% speed increase. , more ram is always better.

good luck with your project

OSX Sofware RAID0 works and should do the trick (if he plans to use it on OS X exclusively)
I tested it on my board (which is almost the same) and it was fine.

These specs are old. A p4? Your earlier specs were better with the intel quad & the gigabyte board. I don't know about the video card...
