Full Version: Bad Grammar
InsanelyMac Forum > Everything Else > Thunderdome (Random Stuff)

Am I the only one who is infuriated by the bad grammar and incorrect terms used in this forum? It really makes me cringe when I see some of the grammar and spellings used in threads on these boards: it's just tedious.

Now I'm aware that English is not the first language of many of the members of this community, and I respect that and I have no problem with lapses in grammar and spelling where it is understandable, but some members who learnt English as their first language really use appalling syntax, spelling and punctuation; there's a spell checker integrated straight into OS X for goodness sake!

Am I alone in feeling this way?

I totally agree on the grammar front. It's always been something that irritates me, it's just people being lazy I reckon.

I am also really irritated about the grammar, I have no problem with commas or capital letters, but misspelled words really drive me crazy.
And the preposterous thing is that some of the bad grammar folks use English as their mother tongue.

And what I also hate is the following
QUOTE
(jibber jabber jibber jabber etc etc)
And sorry about my bad grammar
I have news for you arseholes, what about doing something about it instead of stitching this sentence after every censored2.gif post you make? Yeah, we noticed your bad English, so don't beg for empathy for no apparent reason.

Oh, and please, I mean please look up the difference between its and it's, theirs and there's, and 's form in general.

I know no one is perfect, i know about typos(i do newspaper editing), I know about occasional misspellings etc, but c'mon...
I had to rant. I had to.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's this passionate about grammar! Well, perhaps "passionate" isn't the right word, but it seems I'm not the only one whose teeth quite literally grind on reading things like "Whos put hackintosh on there PC's?"... It makes me angry just thinking about it!

Haha, I know the feeling... angel.png

I´m able to speak and write in a few languages - wouldn´t say without mistakes wink.gif
my native language is german.switching often during the day between different languages, I don´t really care about capital letters (which are more used in german ). languages are always in progress, therefore I believe that capitalization will be history someday in future. a correct spelling will always be very important.

I ain't got no good grammar! (Line I used in my 6th grade English class when my teacher jumped my ass about my speech)

The first thing people would criticize in a "debate", especially on a forum, is one's grammar. Therefore, I always try to use a grammatically correct and precise structure in all of my writings. It also creates good writing habits in my opinion (Being a Business Major at UCF, writing is important). But I feel the use of proper grammar on an informal meeting place (such as insanelymac) is completely optional. One is not getting paid, one is not being judged by anyone who matters, and one does not have to worry about being personally embarrassed.

With that said, saying, "Wut 1s UP my homie dog brother man essay? C4n u hlp me 5et dis 5h1t up f00l?" is completely unacceptable. Not only is it annoying, but very degrading of one's own intelligence. I feel people should have just a little more respect for themselves...

Yeah, me too.

Like Alessandro17 even I'm not a native speaker. I am grateful to people from the UK or elsewhere that they bear with people like me.

Allesando17, I would never tell from your posts that English is not your first language. Its annoying when someone puts in no effort to be legible.

English is not the native language of everyone.

When you correct someone just make sure you speak his native language as good as he is speaking yours wink.gif

Though for native speakers it s another pb ......

I guess I do judge people with really bad grammar. It is part of my job as an English teacher. Still, I try to keep in mind the large number of people that speak Englishi in the forums as a second language. Everybody makes little mistakes. I am certainly no exception. Still, sometimes big mistakes get under my skin.

Agreed.

It gets on my nerves when you see a proper English speaker on these forums butcher the language, and not even make an effort to correct the way they speak. I dunno, but I think it makes them look more helpless in the OSx86 Install Sub-Forum when they say something botched. tongue.gif

I hate when people randomly type without using any caps. For me it's a sign of selfdisrespect, for example 'iphone, mac osx leopard' instead of 'iPhone, Mac OS X Leopard'. I also hate it when people use bad punctuation. I may not write English that well (not first language) but i sure do my best.
