Very harsh words by a British journalist about taking a vacation in Britain and Britain in general.

I must say that I only partially agree with him. Whilst it is true that I have almost always found British tourist accomodations poor value for money when compared with European ones, I have had also some good experiences.
A summer of many years ago I was in Clydebank for work. While looking for a more permanent place where to stay, I slept in a couple of B&B accomodations in Dumbarton. They were quite OK, and when I had some free time I could visit some of the most beautiful places in Europe. With other words, unless things have changed for the worse, the traditional holiday in Scotland is unlikely to disappoint you (if weather permits biggrin.gif )

Some other thoughts:

QUOTE
This year, for the first time since I was a teenager, I vacationed in the UK. I was not alone. Faced with tighter household budgets, soaring travel costs and a strong euro thousands of my cash-strapped fellow Brits decided to stay at home too. Decaying British resorts like Blackpool, Bournemouth and Torquay have enjoyed a bumper summer as a result.

I know that "the better classes" wouldn't go to Blackpool for a holiday. I have never been in Torquay. But Bournemouth looked quite OK to me. I used to call it: "the British Montecarlo".
Also, I noticed that the strong euro is being mentioned once again.
Running With Scissors
The last two summers here have been a wash out, but it still wouldn't stop my holidaying in the UK. I go to North Wales at least once a month and love it.

Who cares what this snob thinks, you make the holiday so if your up for having a banging time then you will have a banging time where ever you go.

I went to Paris last year and to be honest I think I would have had just as good time in any city in the UK. Plus I wouldn't have had to put up with the bloody french.

I agree there, especially when it comes to the Parisians.

Dumbarton?
If you really want to see spectacular Scottish wilderness, you really need to be north of Perth at least, and North of Inverness preferably.

We normally go to the West coast. Some fantastic places, and by far the best holidays I've had.

Well, I mean places like Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, the Southern West coast...
I was particularly clever in discovering places unknown to most. Everything looked to me like Dreamland...
But I have always suspected that there was plenty more to see. I suppose a lifetime spent in Scotland wouldn't be enough.

There's a reason I left Britain. tongue.gif I'll be taking in a holiday in Leeds this November though. How strange does that sound?!

I lived in Leeds and I loved it. So it doesn't sound strange at all to me smile.gif
