Yup, Intel is planning on adding on more cores on a single dye. Intel has just shown off plans for a 6 core Dunnington Xeon to be announced September 14th this year. There are 3 mentioned models, and taken from source.

Xeon X7460 with 2.67GHz clock frequency and 130W TDP, Xeon E7450 with 2.4GHz frequency and 90W TDP and low-voltage Xeon L7455 with 65W TDP and 2.13GHz clock speed. All processors will be built with Intel's new 45-nanometer Penryn technology and will support 1066MHz bus speed. Xeon X7460 will be equipped with 16MB L3 cache while Xeon L7455 and Xeon E7450 will have a 12MB L3 cache onboard.

Now when you compare some of the Phenom models to this that has about 130w TDP, Intel has done a good job with 6 cores from what we've seen of it so far.

With Xeon workstation/server cpus getting 6 cores, there have been no mentioned plans for a 6 core desktop cpu, or even a mobile 6 core cpu.

Note that this is based on Penryn technology, it's not Nehalem.

Still a really amazingly fast chip!

It will be awfully expensive (more than 2300$) and might need a new socket.

Too bad...

It's Penryn based, so most likely lga 771.
