Am I expected to do all of the work, can the user not make any effort to look for the tools?
Are you kidding me? First off, you are replying to the thread and therefore putting yourself in a position of helping someone. Then you complain that, because YOU can't be bothered to provide a link to the tools you reference, that the other person is lazy for not having to go look them up! That has to be the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard... you will help someone, but only as far as you can be bothered.
To be helpful on a forum requires infinite patience because there is a very diverse set of people asking for help. If you don't have any patience, I wouldn't bother offering help.
Yes there are people that ask the same questions over and over again, but that is life. The people that have learned to search the forum, read FAQs and understand how to find information will always be replaced by someone else who needs to learn these methods...
There is responsibility on both the poster and the responder. They need to research to the best of their abilities. In my case that research means finding time between my crying newborn son, my very busy job and finding time to relax. So sometimes I rely on the patient and helpful people on forums who will answer my rather newbie and ill researched questions. The responder needs to reply with the most accurate information they can to the best of their ability... Your best ability was clearly short of posting a link to the actual tool. But don't go complaining that the end user is lazy when you're just at fault...
Rant over...
