Full Version: Time Machine integrity

Just wondering here if anyone knows how to check your Time Machine backups to ensure you have completely restorable data? I currently have two internal hard disks backing up daily onto a much larger FW800 external disk, and losing any of it would be a disaster.

I guess I want to be assured that I can use Disk Utility to restore a Time Machine backup without any glitches if ever necessary. Is there any way check the integrity of the backups?

Can confirm!
I "lost" my wife's ipod directory, only later to find a oldish HDD with a previous Time Machine backup on it, it restored although it wasn't from the original drive! This was of course after I spent 20min thinking up excuses!

I understand how it is supposed to work, of course. rolleyes.gif

But how can I check the backups to make sure they haven't become corrupt? I have manually created backups before (.dmg) from which I was unable to restore due to errors in the file. So I don't want to completely rely on this "safeguard", Time Machine, without periodic checks on the backup's integrity. I love the simplicity of it though.

you can go back in time machine to your files and "restore" them to another folder on your machine

i am no expert -- and not sure if it will do exactly what you want -- but i have seen SuperDuper recommended:
