Hey all,

So my hack has been dug out of the grave through the aquisition of a new motherboard, which works very well with OS X, but i seem to have hit a speedbump which has torn the front end off every single time. I'm reinstalling OS X for maybe the 4th time in 2 days becaues of this issue, and maybe someone can tell me why.

I got a Tyan S3098G2N-RS motherboard. Dual 10/100/1000 ethernet, onboard graphics (no QE/CI), no onboard sound (i have a solution anyway), supports 2gb of RAM (i have 512mb), supports my Celeron D (2.52ghz/533/256kb) and it fits very well in my G3 case. It seems like the perfect board for the perfect install, but i have a problem that doesn't seem to be fixing itself at all.

Every time i power off the computer and i unplug the power (it doesn't matter if i unplug the ATX power cable or the AC power cable), once the board loses power, it also seems to lose the BIOS settings. I've tried 2 other batteries on top of the battery that the board came with, and it seems to happen no matter what i do.

Is there something I'm missing? I'm hoping that it's not designed to do that because none of my systems have ever done that before. I had two other board that run OS X (one died), and neither of them had this problem. seeing as my workstation has a 9600GT, there's no go for that getting OS X, and i need to brush up on my Logic Pro skills. I don't have a permanent place for the rig in my room, and it'll probably be moved endlessly, so having the BIOS reset every time is really annoying.

After the BIOS resets, OS X dies. during the grey apple loading screen it says that i need to restart my computer each time i get there. I thought that maybe the capacitors were not fully charged, so i left the board plugged in all night (but not running) and tried again in the morning with the same results, no matter what i changed in the BIOS. what on earth can i do?

thanks in advance, its a huge help...I'm hoping i can use this for OS X permanently soon!

OS X starts with JaS 10.4.8 install DVD, then i installed the ethernet driver, but only enabled one of the two ports.
then i installed the 10.4.10 update patch, which was successful. I restarted, opened up About This Mac to check, and it worked. after a restart, this is what i get.

the install size of OS X with what i configure is 3.7GB.

after booting the install DVD and checking in Disk Utility, there's now only 3gb on the drive.

where did 700MB go?
