Full Version: Recovering OS X

Ok before I say anything else, I want to say I've searched all night on google and these forums, among others, for an answer. Either old threads get deleted or no one else has had my problem. I downloaded the latest release of refit and proceeded to install windows XP. I never read anything that said it had to be SP2 until later. It wasn't an SP2 disk..
So now I have the infamous hal.dll missing or corrupted error.
The thing is, when I boot the computer up, there are no options to select OS X, even when holding down the option key. I just get a folder with a question mark in it.
I've tried rebuilding the boot.ini as well as deleting the windows partition and recreating it dozens of times, no luck. I just want to be able to use the computer for the time being.
How can I get back into OS X?
And no I didn't delete any other partitions than those I created...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. smile.gif

What type of computer do you have? Is this a Mac or a Hack?

use a windows 98 dos disc and do the command FDISK/MBR then set your os x partition to bootable then restsart you computer without the disc then , you will get back in to os x for the time being until you find a fix.

How can I get back into OS X?

When your Mac is booting hold the option key pressed, that should give the "Boot Menu"

It's a macbook. I have held down the option key and just get a folder with a question mark. I can try the win98 method..
Would it work to just go into the repair console with the xp disk and do the same steps?

"do the command FDISK/MBR then set your os x partition to bootable "
Can you elaborate on what to do after I type that in?

Thanks for the input so far guys. wink.gif

Yeah, have you tried repairing the disk using the disk utility from the Leopard installation DVD? Pop it in and hold down "C" when you reboot.

K I'll try that. Does anyone know the details on FDISK/MBR? In regards to my previous post.. smile.gif

I dont know if this will help but you can have access to your macbook via firewire if you have another mac or hack around.

I had a problem with my wife's mac book two weeks ago plugged it to my hack with a firewire cable and pressed "T" during start up. It starts up in FireWire Target Disk mode just as if it were a external drive. From there you can backup everithing and do a clean install.

Nope doesn't help.. >.<
Heehee. I don't have another mac laying around, just a pc.
That's good to know though. smile.gif

Ok this is what I get when I run the disk utility on the os x cd:
Verify and Repair disk
Macintosh HD
Invalid Volume Header
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid record count
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid record count
Invalid record count
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error

T.T
P.S.: If I need to eject the CD how do I do that? The eject button won't work as the computer is booting..
