Just got done downloading OpenSuse 10.3 and I was wondering, if it would be smarter to use it untill OpenSuse 11 became more stable with KDE 4.1?

Be patient my friend! Personnaly, I tried it for a while in RC but I wasn't ready to move because SUSE remaining with some bugs and fixes to be developed in deep.
10.3 is the most efficient and pretty distros between all Linux (all types include).

The worst is install 10 and after update your fresh installation by the 11.

We are far away from Suse 7 in a tons of floppy ! xD wacko.gif

Hi, I really suggest u wait for 3 days till openSUSE 11, there have been huge improvements in speed, package management, hardware support and stuff due to the newer kernel so right now its not worth downloading an older version.

OpenSUSE 11 has the older kde as well if that is your concern and I am using it right now, not the final release but with all updates and its kde 4 is very stable. smile.gif

Yes, I know but thanks for the links smile.gif The problem is that its a 11gb download so I would rather wait 2 to 3 days and get the official final release.

OpenSuse 11.0 offers KDE 3.5 as well.
OTOH, openSUSE, just like any other distribution which releases on a given date (as opposite to distributions like Debian or Slackware, which release "when they are ready"), is like wine: they become better with time, when the bugs reported by users have been ironed out.

I'd stay away from that for now (gold doesn't necessarily mean final).

It's final, as i siad in original post, mds/haschecked against the final release, its real.

Infact, opensuse releases always get leaked a few days earlier through torrents!

I'm waiting, it's just a couple of days.

I can't stand KDE, 3 or 4.

Gnome in opensuse 11 is much better.

Ditto, it's a tough one for me, i hate how slow gnome can be (well, sluggish, it depends how you interprite (sp?) speed)

KDE is fast but likes to crash quite often (apps at least).

But you have to give it to OpenSuse for actually doing something with the KDE4 Layout rather than all the other distros who have just left it "as is" blue etc.

I love how the file explorer is in kde4 though...

Exactly suse devs did a lot of work, all the other distros just added their name in the kick off menu, introduced a few more bugs while packaging and called it a stable release tongue.gif

Kde 4 on suse is very stable, even if not feature rich, and somethings have been back ported as well.

Yeah, it takes time getting used to but as plasma matures it will probably get much easier and better to manage, u should check out kde 4.1 beta, there is a whole plasma widget to insert folders or create links in.

Well, at least kde 4 has brought some changes to the desktop and its something different to windows or OS X, gnome devs haven't done anything cool at all.

Oh yeah here is something new as well, u will be able to use OS X gadgets with Kde 4, thats something I will find useful smile.gif

I've tried the new beta, i just find desktop widgets to be annoying, i really cannot put up with not using icons on the desktop, as far as i know its something quite alot of people have complained about.

There is alot to like in KDE4 though, however it's still a little buggy, for instance resizin the bottom panel can lead to funny things...like half the icon button goes missing and you just get a white border =/

I do find plasma slightly faster than compiz-fusion in some respects though.

Kickstart is anothing thing i cant forgive them for, navigating the start menu is worse than vistas sad.gif

Yeah the icons thing is something that will take time getting used to but kde 4.1 has a different way of managing them then kde 4.04 so hopefully it should improve.

Resizing the panel bug is fixed in opensuse, in fact I think its the only distro without this problem smile.gif

I agree plasma is getting better day by day.

You can use the old kde menu as well if u like, I have been using suse since 10.2 so I am used to it.

Problem is i've never been a fan of the old menu either but i think i'd prefer that over the new one.

It's nice to see opensuse have fixed that bug, i found it annoying.

It's interesting to think about where plasma could go, it's also interesting to see CF's thoughts on it.

Ah well, time to test opensuse in a few days when i get back biggrin.gif
