After hearing a lot on these forums about how good openSUSE is I decided to install it, and im impressed.

I originally thought Linux distros were basically all the only with different artwork and the odd different application. The previous distros I tried was SuSE 7.1 for about 3 seconds but more recently Fedora and Ubuntu and Kubuntu. The only one ive ever got on with was Ubuntu. Feodra wouldn't configure my sound card and and Kubuntu felt like I was running it on an old Pentium 2 system.

This is probably the reason why I preferred Gnome but after trying openSUSE I am much happier with their KDE desktop, the kickoff start menu is amazing and it is much more responsive.

The is only one thin that is niggling me though when ever I try to install extra apps I get dependency errors, even with one-click installs.

after u install opensuse 10.3 the first thing u have to do is update your system cause there have been many updates and changes in software packages and kernel version etc for example on a fresh install of suse 10.3 u won't be able to install nvidia driver from repos unless u upgrade the system first so that might be the reason for dependency errors

don't worry though package management will be awesome in suse 11 and it will be lighting fast, that was the only issue suse ever had and it will be fixed according to the suse forums dependency problems and everything else will be a million times better

at least now u know why we argue so much to defend suse

It shouldn't happen. Did you download all the updates as snakeeyes suggests?
Also, did you configure the YaST module "Community Repositories"?
I suggest at least: Main Repository (OSS), Main Repository (NON-OSS), Main Update Repository, Packman, Videolan, plus ATI or NVIDIA depending on your card.

I installed from DVD and updated before first login during setup. How do you add other respiratory's dont need the graphic card repos as using gma950.

yast>software>community repos

when u click on the name of a repo it will tell u whether its recommended or not, if it says "yes" then add it, if "experts only then no need, simple as that

add all the other extra repos except of gnome cause u use kde, if u don't want action games no need for those and if u don't want qemu or virtualbox no need for those either and the same goes for wine as well.

Its really simple, just do some exploring, Yast is the main control center.

Yeah by default no repo is selected, who knows it might change with the next release cause package management will be receiving a major improvement in version 11, plus it will be super fast as well

Hmm I'm a fan of Suse and really liked it when Novell hired miguel de icaza and the other Ximian people. And though overshadowed by Ubuntu in trendyness, is the driving source behind alot of innovation in the linux world. So obviously I like gnome/gtk. But I hear alot of people saying how they like opensuse's implementation of KDE, so I think I'll take the plunge and try KDE when 11 comes out.

Do you guys think beta 3 is stable or should I just wait until a RC?

Anyone install smart package manager through yast and see what repos it offers after a "su, smart update"?

I really suggest waiting for the final release, cause betas and alphas r never 100% stable and they r meant for developers bug reporting and fixing stuff. You might get a bad impression using a beta.

Yes I agree opensuse or Novell r the driving source of innovation, the new installer in suse even speaks the commands for u from what I hear, its an experimental feature.

11.0 RC is only 3 days away from now, it is worth waiting.
The default Smart doesn't have many repos, but in 10.3 I followed this how-to:

However I believe that YaST will be much better than Smart in 11.0, also because of better conflicts solving.

Oh wow, I didn't realize they have release date, 23 days. I'm looking forward to this but couldn't wait so I installed beta 3 anyway.
