NO FUN PIG
Hello,

I have been asked to do a proof of concept iPhone app (on an emulator). I have never used or owned a Mac before. Can someone please answer some basic questions. I am not getting paid for this and I cannot afford Mac hardware. I use Windows XP.

1. Which OSX software should I get. I hear about Leopard, Tiger etc. Which one is the best for iPhone development?
2. Do the dev tools come included with the OSX or do I have to get them separatelly?
3. Of couse I need to work out how to install the OSX on my PC. Can someone confirm for me that iPhone development is indeed possible using OSX installed on a PC. I'd hate to go to all that trouble to find out I cant develop apps.
4. Appart from OSX, what other software do I need. I assume the iPhone sdk is a free download?
5. How steep a learning curve is objective-c/cocoa for someone with a C#/OO background?
6. Any other things I need to know. Basically I just want to get a dev environment set up.

Thanks

1. You need Mac OS X Leopard to run the iPhone Dev Kit
2. You have to download the iPhone SDK and install it
3. Yes, I have OS X running on a PC and it runs the iPhone Dev Tools fine
4. Everything you need (Xcode and iPhone SDK) is free
5. I don't know because I'm not much of a developer
6. This site really got me started on objective-c and all that, great place to start

Hi all,

First off I'd like to say thanks for all of the work you guys have put in to making InsanelyMac a great resource. I just got an hp tx2115 laptop about a month ago and when I found out you needed a mac to install the iphone dev kit, it only took me a day or two to get my laptop to dual-boot Vista & OSX while saving HP's recovery partition without having to ask anyone anything. While I've worked a little bit on macs before, I've never gotten into the nitty gritty of the system so that's saying something.

So like I said, I installed OSX to put the iPhone dev kit on it. Unfortunately, I've tried to install the iPhone dev kit 3 or 4 times and it always locks up the system during the installer. After the first time it did it, I was no longer able to boot into OSX without using safe mode. I've got a decent amount of technical expertise, but I have no clue where to start troubleshooting in a Mac environment so any help would be appreciated since I'm really looking forward to cranking out an iPhone app or two and still have to learn cocoa smile.gif

Ok, after looking at this a little more, I don't think it's the iPhone dev kit that's freezing it. It just seems to be freezing if I'm don't do anything on it after a while (I would leave the installer to install while I would do something else). Maybe power management problems? I'm gonna try to disable any power management settings and attempt to install it while actively using it. We'll see how it goes.

Ok, I guess it was freezing on both. I disabled the power management settings so it's not freezing after 10 minutes like it was, but on the iPhone SDK it's still freezing when it's running the installer script for the 'Installing CHUD' portion of the program. Any ideas?
