I just checked and Apple care is indeed available in the education store. Anybody notice how the base price is also $100 less? I'd say this is a pretty good update. No new tech but they're offering more features for less money. Maybe after WWDC next month we will see some price drops in the MacBook Pro line as well.

Lamest. Update. EVER.

Would be cool if you said why, and use some agruments... Then we might get a reasonable discussion going.

Anyway, I do agree though. It's not something special, 2.16 Ghz, wowz its not that much of an upgrade (unless they indeed started using sants rosa chips..) the RAM and all.. jees, no ofence but 1gb is pretty much needed at least to run everything very smoothly. It seems APPLE realized that finally. The only 'real' upgrade I see is the bigger hard drive, but it's not that special is it?

Then again, it came out of the blue, it's better then nothing.. right? :thumbsup_anim:

It is a disapointing update.

Why?

I never really cared about the speed or the HDD size of the MacBooks. With an update I was more looking for a better graphics card and a DVD burner on the base model - neither of which we got.

That doesn't mean fatser processors, more HDD space and $100 (£50) off the base model isn't something to be a little happy about.

Just want to ask if we knew this was coming because I haven't spent much time on the forum reciently and so this was new to me?

i'm actually seriously considering selling my 1.83Ghz CD MBP for one of the mid-range white MacBooks. I dont game so I dont really care about the GMA950. I had a MacBook before but was tempted by a cheap refurb MBP.

Any thoughts?

You're in the UK, right? I'd be interested. All depends on the price (and the condition of the laptop).

With the standard RAM bumped up to 1 gb, I would have though the black MB would now come with 2 gb. They should have maybe waited until WWDC and upgraded to at least Santa Rosa, if they started at least giving the option for a better graphics card I'd be buying one now.

Bit disappointing that it's not Santa Rosa, because it seems to be kind of half way there, with faster CPUs, 950GMA, 802.11n. But you miss out on faster CPU bus and flash memory.

A 7,200rpm HD would be a nice option too!

Selling it is a good idea, because refurb deals are the cheapest. My gf managed to grab a refurb deal on a 2 GHz Core Duo MBP that was 35% off and then bought 2 Gig RAM from eBay seperately.

You can't beat it, honestly :pirate2:

In my opinion, this is an ok update. I mean common, this is why you dont get your hopes up above the sky, and when Apple doesnt deliver, you feel crushed. Santa Rosa platform is not as special as what some people make it out to be, especially on the Macbook Pro's, since it has a dedicated graphics card. Its a 200Mhz increase in processor speed, and and higher L2 cache. Its not going to seem any noticibly faster than the current C2D lineups most of the time. The only real advantage to having Santa Rosa, is the Intel X3000 integrated graphics chips that come along, which is a decent upgrade from the GMA950's, so this performance incresae will only be greatly noticed on the Macbook's, not the MBP's. I think that during WWDC, the MBP, and the MB will see a Santa Rosa update though...this is just like a minor upgrade leading up to then.

Well now the base mb seems like a deal for those looking for a new mac. I'm not really in the market for a new lappy, but if I was I wouldn't overlook the base model.

I was hoping for a graphics update perhaps to the x3000 as some sites have been suggesting. otherwise not too impressed with the update but it's always nice to see better hardware for a lower price, can't complain about that especially with the education discount dropping the base model down to $999!
