Mega is run by the same people that hosted MegaUpload. If you'll remember last year when that site was taken down by the US Government for DMCA violations. Kim Dotcom has worked out a pretty interesting way of avoiding legal problems this go-around. The encryption is done on YOUR machine, so what Mega is storing for you is an encrypted file. They don't have the decryption key - you do. What this means is that when the government comes knocking on their door, they will cooperate with law enforcement and turn over your data. Your encrypted data that they cant decrypt. This does nothing to stop the fuzz from coming after you, but it protects Mega from anything illegal you do.
I created an account and am currently awaiting my validation email. Reports from Gizmodo, ZDNet and Forbes, Mega have reported 'overwhelming demand' for their service and Mega will be 'working on more capacity'. Kim Dotcom reported over 1 million subscribers the first day. When I get a chance to test out the upload and download speeds, I'll post more below.
UPDATE!
The activation email took nearly 4 hours to arrive. I am guessing that either there is a huge demand that they didn't correctly anticipate, or a Kiwi (the New Zealand national bird) flew it to the United States for me. The first thing that popped up in my browser was a statement telling me my browser is out of date and that I should upgrade to Chrome. My browser may be out of date (Waterfox 15.0) but I am not 'upgrading' to Chrome. Time will tell if that affects my speed. I am uploading Gimp starting at 14:00 MST and I'll let you know when its done.
SECOND UPDATE!
Nothing happening. According to Gizmodo, Kim Dotcom has said that speed will improve shortly. I can only imagine that it will since it has nowhere to go but up. Yes that is 5 hours of elapsed time with NO PROGRESS at all. I'm giving up and I'll try back next week... or next month.
THIRD UPDATE!
So I saw the success of others and decided to take my account for a spin:
Looks like Kim Dotcom was right about getting the speed issues fixed. I have a pretty fat broadband pipe (15Mb/s) with a fairly consistent upload of ~ 1500Kb/s and the upload speed that is shown above is better than I get on my SkyDrive or Google Drive. If you do the math it appears the upload is using my full upload speed so whatever speed limits that may crop up for me, it looks like they'll be on my end. So far I am pretty impressed.
