10.4.8 Seeded to Developers

cavemonkey50

While Leopard has been stealing the show lately, it might be time to start thinking about Tiger again. Mac Rumors is reporting that 10.4.8 has been seeded to developers. The most interesting news regarding the upcoming update is the size.

The build weighs in at 305 MB for intel and 147 MB for PPC. If left as-is, the updates would be some of the largest in history (Mac OS 10.4.7, released in June, was only 133 MB intel and 64 MB PPC). However, many of Apple's early builds are significantly larger than when they are released to the public.

With all of those changes, there are bound to be some notable bug fixes. Personally, I'm hoping for a fix for the MacBook's colored lines on boot issue that appeared around 10.4.7. What fixes are you hoping for in 10.4.8?

I'd like NTFS Write support like in Linux. I just installed it on my Ubuntu machine and it works fine, and since it's open source it shouldn't be hard to implement in the Darwin kernel :-)

You are wrong, it would not be as easy as you say.

The ntfs-3g utilizes FUSE (file system in userspace; meaning that it doesn't exist inside the kernel), which doesn't have an equvalent on OS X.

Still; there has been rumors that the ntfs-3g developers have been hired by apple to implement this feature in Leopard.

Ah, didn't know that.

Still, it has been proved it can be done, and everything is out in the open (since it's open source), so I bet we can expect a lot more support for NTFS on many different OS'es including OS X.

I also believe that Apple has a great deal of interest in supporting NTFS writing since it'll make the Switch easier. So the rumours about hiring NTFS-3g developers sound plausible to me. :-)

Wait a minute. If Jas is gone, then how is OSX86 going? Ugh, getting that fealing that I might rebuild my Winblows box to have till I get a Mini. I could keep running 10.4.6 since I don't see any issues. I just don't hope OSX86 is dieing or getting harder. I don't want to hack myself. I luckily got the Jas 10.4.6 install, then the Boris install for my graphics card. That is it. No console or fiel hacking was needed. Nice clean installs and it was all good.
