[SOLVED] Unable to Install on Inspiron 1520

05 February 2013 - 06:05 AM

I posted about this a few months back, but after a few days I found I didn't have the time to continue messing with Mountain Lion on my Inspiron 1520.

I followed this guide: http://legacy.tonyma...p?f=170&t=26283
Only problem is, Chameleon won't continue after I select which partition I want to boot from.

I figured that the process for Mountain Lion would be about the same as it is for Lion (I don't have a copy of Lion).

I tried selecting Lion_USB from the menu, but then it just goes to a gray screen and reboots. I tried with the suggested flags ("arch=i386 -x -v"), and that spat out very little text and jumped back to the menu. I tried with just "-x -v", and then it loaded all the appropriate kexts, got a bit past "Restart fix applied" (that's as far as I was able to read) and rebooted.

I feel bad for letting my previous post die, especially since I was being helped (thanks eep357!), but I guess I just got swamped with work (yay college).

I'm currently trying this guide: http://www.insanelym...-mountain-lion/
I have my doubts as to whether it will work though, considering it's made for Gigabyte motherboards, and this Dell laptop is hardly that.

EDIT: SOLVED! DSDT patched by LatinMcG: http://www.insanelym...0/#entry1886726
Booted properly with a new copy of Lion (not ML) and the "-v" flag.

Specs:
Dell Inspiron 1520
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.4 GHz
nVidia NB8P-GS (I think that's a GeForce 8600M)
2 GB RAM

Thanks in advance for any help!

Inspiron 1520 - Still waiting on root device / IOACPIFamily

21 October 2012 - 05:33 AM

I was following this guide and I got through the first 17 steps, but I ran into a bit of a roadblock.

Here are the problems:
When I boot with no arguments: I get the prohibitory symbol (circle with line through it)
With arch=i386 -x -v (like the guide suggests): IOACPIFamily Kernel Panic (See photo below)
Without -x: Still waiting on root device

Specs:
Dell Inspiron 1520
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.4 GHz
nVidia NB8P-GS (Possibly GeForce 8600M)
2 GB RAM

Any ideas?

Freezing animations, I/O Errors, no clicking after boot, other various issues

02 September 2012 - 12:00 AM

I finally got Lion to work on my Inspiron 531 (see http://www.insanelym...howtopic=281007 for details), but I'm running into a lot of random issues that are hindering the performance a bit:
  • Animations commonly get stuck on the screen or do not finish drawing to the screen, stopping right in the middle (I have a picture of this attached)
  • Sometimes on boot, the computer will finish all of the boot process, but then hang, repeating something like "disk2: I/O error." even though disk2 is not one of my hard drives (maybe optical?). The times it happens seems to be pretty random. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
  • Along that line, Finder randomly asked me what I wanted to do with the blank DVD I inserted, even though the DVD was not recently inserted nor blank. Perhaps I have a bad optical kext?
  • Finally, and this one of the most irritating, the system hangs for about 10 minutes at the login screen after booting. I can move the cursor, but typing and clicking do not work (though it does catch up after it stops hanging).
  • The system locks up quite nicely when I attempt to open "About This Mac" from the menu
  • Performing a hard shutdown at any time will cause the system to stop booting, and then I have to repair the filesystem from another machine using Disk Utility
  • Pressing the power button causes the computer to go into a "deep sleep", where it will turn off essentially all the hardware but keep the power on, and cannot recover without a hard shutdown, then causing the above problem.
  • After rebooting or shutting down, my boot record has to be repaired with a Windows 7 repair disc because I get "boot0: error" (shown in an attached photo)
  • Various core applications like to hang (System Preferences, Finder, unified menu bar, etc.) for no apparent reason
If anyone can help with any of these problems, please let me know. I am sooooo close to having a working hackintosh.

Here's my setup:
Running iATKOS L2 with 10.7.3 AMD kernel v4
IOPCIFamily has been replaced with this and I added this AppleNForceATA
Using Finder from Lion DP2 (due to 32-bit compatibility)
Enabled USB kext and NVEnabler in iATKOS install

I'm booting with the following flags:
-legacy -v UseKernelCache=No arch=i386

Note that mach_kernel must be specified if not booting from installed Chameleon, and UseKernelCache=No has just been what I've used because I didn't yet rebuild the cache.

Here are the specs:
  • Model: Dell Inspiron 531
  • Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (Dual-core/SSE3)
  • Motherboard: Asus/Dell M2N61-AX with nForce chipset
  • ATA Controller: nForce MCP61 (03F6:10DE)
  • Audio: nVidia HD Audio (0014:10DE)
  • Network: nForce Ethernet (03EF:10DE)
  • Graphics: nVidia GeForce GT 430 (0DE1:10DE)
  • BIOS Version: Phoenix AwardBIOS 1.0.13 (Dell)

SOLVED - Still Waiting for Root Device - Lion on Dell Inspiron 531

25 July 2012 - 10:09 PM

I installed iATKOS L2 to my Dell Inspiron 531's hard disk using a machine that was already running Snow Leopard, then did the following: Here's the guide I followed to get Lion installed (I used the moderate method): http://www.insanelym...pic=278181&st=0

When booting, I use the following flags (and sometimes variants of it):
mach_kernel -legacy -v arch=i386 npci=0x3000
The reason for the mach_kernel is that I don't currently have the bootloader on the disk working, so I'm using a boot CD.

My problem right now is that when I boot, it gets stuck on the infamous "Still waiting for root device". My BIOS doesn't have any IDE mode options, or any SATA options where I can select AHCI. I've attached a picture of the screen when the boot fails.

Here are my system's specifications:
  • Model: Dell Inspiron 531
  • Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (Dual-core/SSE3)
  • Motherboard: Asus/Dell M2N61-AX with nForce chipset
  • ATA Controller: nForce MCP61 (03F6:10DE)
  • Audio: nVidia HD Audio (0014:10DE)
  • Network: nForce Ethernet (03EF:10DE)
  • Graphics: nVidia GeForce GT 430 (0DE1:10DE)
  • BIOS Version: Phoenix AwardBIOS 1.0.13 (Dell)
  • Distribution: iATKOS L2 (10.7.2)
I'm not sure whether this forum approves of using iATKOS or not, but I didn't see anything saying otherwise, so I assume I'm safe for now. Let me know if I've violated any rules.

HP Pavilion dv7 Hardware Issues

02 July 2012 - 09:50 PM

Good day everyone!
I've got 10.7.2 running on my HP Pavilion dv7-4280us, but I'm having trouble getting proper graphics, wifi, and my internal microphone working.

Graphics Issue (ATI Mobility Radeon 6550M / Intel HD3000)
Currently it boots into OS X with the Intel graphics from my i5-480M, but without a kext, so I don't have QE/CI right now.

Here's what I've gathered from the Internet so far, though I don't know how reliable the information is:
  • Because this model has switchable graphics, the only way to enable the ATI card is by modding the BIOS (I'd prefer not to mod it though)
  • My Intel graphics have a strange device id, compared with other models of HD 3000 graphics (0046:8086, rather than 01xx:8086), and it doesn't look like people have had a lot of luck with it.
  • Even though the system is running on Intel graphics, the ATI card may still be powered on, causing excessive battery drain.
Here's what I'd like to find out:
  • Is there a way to disable Intel graphics and use the ATI card without modifying the BIOS?
  • If not, how can I get QE/CI working on my Intel chip?
  • If the ATI card is indeed still powered on, how can I turn it off? (I've heard through DSDT, but there isn't a DSDT that exists for my model)
Wireless Issue (Broadcom BCM43224AG)
My Broadcom wireless card (which is evidently the same model used in late model MacBook Pro/Air) doesn't seem to be working for me. I've read around and found that other people are having trouble with this model, but I haven't found a solution that's worked for me yet. I've read that people have modified the chip's firmware and even their BIOS, but I would really prefer to not do that (because I still have to use the card on Windows).

Audio Issue (IDT High Definition Audio w/ Beats)
My system has an integrated IDT audio card. I installed the VoodooHDA kext from http://www.osx86.net...p?do=file&id=22, and everything is working except for the microphone. When I updated to the latest VoodooHDA drivers, it caused the system to stop booting with the infamous "Still waiting for root device" error, so I had to roll back. The microphone in this model seems to be integrated with the webcam (which is working), so I don't know whether I can actually use it or not.

Specs Summary
System: HP Pavilion dv7-4280us
OS X Version: 10.7.2
Processor: Intel Core i5-480M
GPU: Intel HD 3000 / ATI Mobility Radeon 6550M
Wireless: Broadcom BCM43224AG

If anyone can help with any of these issues at all, it would be HUGELY appreciated.
