#2041300 Dell XPS 8700 haswell system - 10.9 Mavericks

Posted by slave-zeo on 17 July 2014 - 03:12 AM

so my xps8700 finally arrived, I followed the steps mentioned earlier this thread with clover but didnt have much luck (was sure that the BIOS settings were right). I was stuck at the kernel panic reboot loop and couldn't even get into the install screen, tried different bootflag combinations and settings (-x dart=0 etc...and KernelPM) and still have no luck. Does anyone have any idea? I even tried the myHack method with the provided patched Kernel, no success at all... Did you use Clover as the boot loader? If you're using Chameleon you're gonna have the reboot over and over problem unless you use a patched kernel. I strongly recommend against a patched kernel at this point since Clover can patch it on boot time. I'm an idiot, I re-read your posting.  If you are using clover go into the options >> Binary Patching Menu >> and make sure you have Kernel PM Patch enabled. This will stop the reboot problem. Hopefully.  Let me know and I'lll...

Actually, I believe they ship them with Win8 on the standard HDD (!?!) and have the SSD configured as cache (I seem to remember there being an option for this in the bios). I think someone said something about it earlier in this thread. Pretty silly of Dell :) I'd install and use OS X on the SSD (depending on the size of it) and leave the HDD untouched If I were to have Win8 on my system. Most of the MSATA and newer SSDs have what's called 4k blocks. There is an extra step you gotta do to install clover (or chameleon for that matter) to the SSD so the system can boot. I'll include the steps in my guide I'm working on. Of course you might get lucky and your SSD not use 4k blocks.

Guys thanks for the effort and write up, really appreciate it! I'm new to hackintosh and I'll be having an xps8700 soon, just wondering if anyone has got any luck in dual booting the maching with win 8? cheers. I've not had luck dual booting from the same hard drive, but if you have 2 drives (HD+HD or SSD+HD) it should be cake. Put OS X on one drive and Windows 8 on the other. Of course I've not had luck dual booting form the same drive on any system with clover. I've got it to work with chameleon, but you kind of need clover to patch the kernel to keep our system from rebooting at boot time. It's a bit tricky to set up (at first, until you learn the ropes) but the xps 8700 is a great hackintosh.

This is the start of the Dell 8700 Mavericks Guide. Please check here for further updates. First thing I did was take a look at the BIOS of the system. You can get to the system BIOS by pressing F2 at boot time. Make sure to Set the SATA to AHCI. You do this so OS X can read your hard drives. It should be set to AHCI already but make sure just in case. Next up make sure you set the Boot Mode to [Legacy]. This is so the bootloader can load. It's possible for Clover to work in UEFI, but I haven't been able to figure it out. So for now change it to [Legacy].  <The next part of the Guid will go here. Have patience, please.>  What is your Clover setup like? I haven't used it but I'm interested in the unpatched kernel trick you spoke of.  Honestly, I just installed Clover and it did its thing. I don't recall doing anything special. But if it automatically reboots when booting (normal unpatched haswell behavior) you can use the keyboard...

I've had good luck thus far with the patch, although I did get a hardlock while playing WoW. Only one though. thanks again for the find.

*BAM* the patched instead of recompiled kernel fixed it. iCloud, IMessage, and FaceTime all work! Thanks for the train of thought, theconnactic.

Blonny, here is an archive of the PATCHED vanilla kernel. https://www.dropbox....nel_patched.zip I've never had much luck installing Windows (or any other OS) on the same disk with OS X. I know it's possible but I haven't been able to pull it off. Still plowing ahead on the iMessage thing...

Pepto, I am using chameleon with the filenvram activated. I also have Ethernet=BuiltIn and my ethernet on en0. I'm not sure why it's not working, honestly. Clover will not work with my mouse for some strange reason. It's kind of impossible to use it.

OK, I gathered some more information about my Dell XPS 8700 and OS X last night. I finally achieved great success installing 10.9 Mavericks after using an unmodified Kernel compiled from the original sources. This kept the computer from rebooting over and over again. You'll still need to make a USB installer stick using a 8GB or bigger thumbdrive. Use Pandora or MyHack to do so. After it's finished with your thumbdrive replace the stock kernel with the recompiled one. Your thumbdrive should now boot into the Mavericks installer (using the -x kernel flag at boot up). After making your installer you'll need to dive into 8700s BIOS and change a couple of things for OS X to install and run. Turn off Secure Boot and enable Legacy instead of UEFI. Save your settings and reboot into the installer. Keep in mind you'll need a smbios.plist, com.boot.chameleon.plist, fakesmc.kext and the null power management kernel extension (didn't need the null power extension after...

Confirmed working on Asus p8p67 Rev.3 B3. Kills onboard audio (Realtek ALC892) in OS X But that was expected (sound works fine in linux and windows). No power management kexts needed and speedstepping (overclocking) now works on my 2600k.

Posted by slave-zeo on 11 July 2012 - 11:38 PM

I figured it out. Something must have happened during the installation and it munched the ATI/AMD kexts. All I had to do was open the BaseSystem.dmg in pacifist, sift thru the directory structure to find the kexts i wanted and restore the ATI/AMD kexts. Working great now.
