#1914169 Cant get the boot loader to load!

Posted everdone on 11 May 2013 - 12:42 AM

You can boot into OSX which indicates a boolloader is working. Download and open Chameleon Wizard and look at the contents of the org.Chameleon.boot.plist located in the Extra folder. It sounds as if you have "Quiet Boot" selected in the boot.plist file, make sure that feature is not selected and you have a 'TimeOut' of at least 3 sec selected. That should allow you time to pause during boot such that you can select another OS to boot.

To add a new bootloader version to Hackinstaller: Download the Binary of the new version of Chameleon you desire (the one with i386 folder), Open 'Hackinstaller', open '-extra' folder, open 'bootloaders' folder. Inside 'bootloaders' create a new folder and name it your new version of Chameleon. Inside that folder place a copy of the 'i386' folder from the download. Now run Hackinstaller and select the bootloader option. You will have among the bootloaders available a choice for the one you just added.

#1856831 Black Screen ML. Which Install Procedure to Fix?

Posted everdone on 29 September 2012 - 03:37 PM

One of the easiest, most flexible tools to use to create a boot USB, install a bootloader and manage kexts is the Digital Dreamers HackInstaller script. You will find it in his thread in the Tutorials section. It is contained in the first post to that long thread (currently version is 7.1). Read carefully that first post as he explains a lot on how to use the script and the process for installion. The script comes configured for a particular Gigabyte board with the kext folders containing kexts for that board, however it is very easy to change the kexts in the folders to match what is required for your board, mainly for audio and ethernet. The most important issue for you to get the 5770 video working is having a Simbios.plist file that matches your processor. Download Champlist and use one of the 'standard' Simbios files that closely matches your cpu. That file should be installed in the Extra folder on the USB installer and in your ML install. The org.chamelion.boot.plist...

Prior to the install when you formatted the HD, did you format an existing partition or did you partition the HD anew and then format. It sounds like there is a hidden partition on the HD that the BIOS boot routine is seeing and it never 'sees' the Mac partition where the bootloader resides. When you boot from the USB installer stick, BIOS picks that up first and the bootloader on the USB sees the Mac install. When booted into Mac enter the disk Utility and see how many partitions are on the HD. You may need to start from the beginning and repartition the HD to eliminate the 'phantom' partition.

VirusX: You can create a new 8gig or so partition on either of the two hard drives. Use DD's script to make the partition bootable with ML installer. Then install from there. You can install 'on-top' of SL or do a new install to a new HD. Generally speaking, what works in SL and Lion will work in ML - exceptions being sleepenabler kexts and video. Look around the forum and you will find a number of threads where video cards that previously worked fine, yield a black or weird screen in ML. I use an ATI5770 that works well. I had a 9500GT card in another machine that didn't work in ML, however a different vendor 9500GT works - mileage may vary! InsanelyOne: Yes, you can install ML on top of SL. Create a bootable USB with ML using DD's script, boot into the USB and select the SL partition as the install target. I would caution, as always, to do a clone of backup of your SL install just in case trouble occurs.

#1825371 Problem after update

Posted everdone on 08 June 2012 - 06:11 PM

Big, Huge problem - you did not provide enough information for anyone to really diagnose your problem! My supposition is that you either originally installed from a distro or using a "magic stick" that had you pick and choose from a menu indicating your hardware. Bottom line is that neither method leaves a clue as to what is actually installed in the way of modified or extra drivers (kexts in the Mac world). When one updates the system (10.7.2 to 10.7.3 for example) on a Mac, vitrually all the existing Mac kexts are replaced with ones from the new version (the ComboUpdate in your case). The only 'old' kexts remaining are non-Apple ones that have been added, any modified Mac kexts have been replaced by the update. The problem you describe is a video problem. I suspect your original install included a modified Mac kext for your video card that has been replaced by the 'new' Mac kext. Result is your video card no longer works. You will need to figure out...

If you have a Lion retail DVD, double click to open the DVD then run the script to create a bootable USB drive. Then boot from the USB drive to install Lion to the HD. Once the install is complete, reboot with the USB but select your new install to run instead of the LionInstaller. Once at the desktop copy DD's script to the HD, run it and install the bootloader and kexts to the new install. Make sure the Extra folder on the new install contains your Simbios and boot.plist files.

#1817357 Lion install won't boot. PCI Configuration Begin, SL works 100%

Posted everdone on 01 May 2012 - 06:01 PM

I suggest you forget the 'beast' and try another way. In the Tutorials section there is a long thread by DigitalDreamer for installation on Gigabyte boards. He has developed a great script for installing beginning with Leopard through MountainLion. Go to the first page of his thread, read carefully the first post in the thread and download his latest script. The current script will help install Lion and ML with kexts for those two OSes, however if you need different kexts for your particular MB they can easily be copied to the kext folders to be loaded by his script. The script will also create a bootable USB from your Lion dmg file. The Chameleon boot version included in his script will boot SL, Lion and ML and should work with your video card. Try his script and you should come to a bootable Lion.

Champlist is an application one can use to create a boot.plist and simbios files. Download the app and use the simbios function. Clicking 'save' in the app's window will save the file you are creating to the Extra folder on the boot drive, click 'as' and you can choose where to save the file. I usually save the created file to a chosen location, view it, and when I am satisfied is does what I want, copy and paste into Extra. I notice in your boot.plist you have an EFI string. Is that for video? I am more acoustomed to using GraphicsEnabler set to Yes for video. With your current boot.plist, if you use verbose (-v flag) mode at boot, do you see several pages of kexts loading before the machine boots into the Apple desktop?

Sorry, did not realize you were dual booting Win7 and Mac! In your boot.plist file in Extra do you have EthernetBuiltIn=Yes? Does your Simbios file closely match your hardware? Download Champlist and create a new Simbios from its data base (get the closest you can to the cpu you have installed). Do you have UseKernelCache=No in your boot.plist? If it is set to Yes change it to No.

#1421580 QE/CI/Resolution for 8600gt 512mb on snow leopard?

There are two possible com.apple.Boot.plist. The original one is in Library/Preferences/Systemconfiguration and is the one that OS86tools and EFIStudio modify. With a Chameleon bootloader there can also be a boot.plist in /Extra folder. If there is one in that folder, Chameleon will use that one during boot. That boot.plist should contain the GraphicsEnabler key or the device_propertities key if using EFI string for video. Do not use both GraphicsEnabler and EFI string for video at the same time. If you have a boot.plist in /Extra and have used OS86tools to create an EFI string and it is in the L/P/Sc folder, you can copy and paste the string from that plist to the one in /Extra (be sure to include the device_properties key).
