I have some knowledge in AppleHDA patching for Snow Leopard that I've picked up from some of the guys here on this forum.
I usually use the DSDTSE tool for easily modifying my DSDT files.
I prefer to apply all hacks / drivers separate from the OS by placing them in the /Extra/Extensions folder, although sometimes you can't avoid adding them into the /System/Library/Extensions folder.
I find it extremely useful to create kext packs as I often forget which files I used when I decide to reinstall OS X.
