Katana

09 December 2006 - 03:16 AM

Katana is a Callisto and AGPGart installer for ATI graphics cards. It enables OpenGL acceleration and may someday enable Quartz Extreme. Katana should only be used as a last resort (as there are usually various and unique fixes for most ATI cards). Katana is, in essence, a highly stylized shotgun approach.

Now that Katana has become much more popular, I figured a separate thread would be a good idea, and without further ado...

Ladies and Gentlemen of the OSx86 community, I present to you Katana 0.3!

Katana 0.3 brings a lot of new things to the table, but below are the main ones which you'll notice right away:

Intelligent autodetection
Katana 0.3 Uses a much smarter (per se) autodetection algorithm and has been incredibly accurate thus far.

KatanaDoctor Lite
The Doctor is in! KatanaDoctor Lite is a nifty app which enables you to take snapshots of your graphics configuration. You can back up multiple configurations (and add little notes to them too), and restore backed up configurations. A GUI version will be introduced in 0.4. KatanaDoctor automatically backs up your configuration before you install 0.3 so you can always go back to that if need be.

The latest and greatest kexts
I've always tried to keep to keep the Katana builds as up to date as I can, and this build is no exception. 0.3 includes a slightly modified Callisto 005 kext and AGPGart 2.1z.

I hope it works for you! The file is attached below in zip format.

:(

Release notes: (Stable = confirmed working by nearly everyone, Testing = latest release - but may not work for you, Dev = a release that could use a little massaging, you might want to consider alternate builds for the time being)

0.2c (STABLE) seems to be the old standby - no autodetection. Use 0.2c if you really don't feel like messing around with new builds and you just want something that works.

0.3 - (DEV) - bleeding edge kexts, new autodetection algorithm - Includes KatanaDoctor.

0.3a4 has been temporarily removed until support for AGP@* type cards has been fully implemented and confirmed working

Before you run the 0.3 Installer, run KatanaDiag.command (double click it) and make sure the autodetection test passes before you install. The autodetection script in Katana 0.3a installer is the same as the one in the KatanaDiag script, so it should install correctly provided it passes the test, but the installer has been known to take significantly longer than KatanaDiag in some cases

PackageMaker Question

20 November 2006 - 07:36 AM

Hey everyone, I've created a shiny installing package for a few kexts, but in order for the kexts to work correctly, a shell script must be run after the files are done installing with the bash visible.

The shell script looks like this...

...
echo Please enter your Graphics Card Device ID, then press enter.
echo If you are not sure how to check for the Device ID, type \"help\" minus quotes
read devid
...

So the terminal/bash needs to open so that they can enter their device ID.

I tried renaming the shell script to postinstall, put it in Contents/Resources folder but I'm not sure if it ran.

Anyways, in brief, it would be awesome if the terminal could pop up after an install running my shell script. And I was wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction? I'm kinda new to PackageMaker and any help anyone could spare would be great.

Thanks!

Getting closer - An ATI graphics guide

04 August 2006 - 09:51 PM

Hello everyone,

I've been doing MONTHS of research for getting QE/CI working on my mobility radeon 9000. At this point in time, I'm fairly confident that we can't get QE/CI working on anything lower than the 9550 (if I'm wrong please correct me).

Although I havn't gotten QE/CI working on my laptop, I've gotten pretty darn close. I've gotten it to the point where iTunes will render visualizations with very decent framerates, chess with no artifacts, etc. I'm not sure if any graphically intense applications (ex. Motion :D) will work on this, but if anyone can get it going I'd love to hear.

Anyways, enough gibberish, lets get on with the guide.

Firstoff, go to Omni's Callisto project page

http://omni.starchaser.org/callisto/

I tried all the builds, but only build 003 worked for me. All other builds either didn't work or I got a very depressing black screen. If you don't feel like experimenting, I reccomend downloading build 003, it seems like it has the highest success rate.

After you download the Callisto build, extract it and open the installation file (html). Follow the steps in the walkthrough. After you've completed those steps you (should) be able to change your resolution.

Now lets get some 3d acceleration!

Download JaS's ATi driver by clicking the link below.

http://forum.osx86pr...c...post&id=678

r0ck3r4ever's guide for installing this driver was very good (which you can read below)

unzip the file
open terminal
do the following
sudo -s
enter your password
rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/ATI*
cp -r /Users/YOUR USER NAME HERE/Desktop/Ati/build/Debug/Ati.kext /System/Library/Extensions/
chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/Ati.kext
kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions/
then you're done!!!
reboot system

After that you should have decent 3d acceleration and a higher resolution with no mouse tearing or artifacts.
Again, if someone notices that I screwed something up, please don't hesitate to correct me.

Edit: Aperture runs OK (even w/o CI), a bit sluggish but very usable, also DVDs can play back using VLC (also a bit sluggish, but its a step in the right direction).
