In Topic: Possible to load XP install on physical disk into Parallels?

29 August 2008 - 11:53 PM

That seemed to work for us. We installed XP first to test our hardware, then installed OS X on a separate drive once we knew everything was working proper. When we later set up Parallels, it recognized the XP drive as a Boot Camp partition and installed Parallels Tools on it. My son switches back and forth all the time and hasn't had any trouble booting from the XP drive when he wants to.

any other advice pls.?

I'm kind of a newb, so I could be wrong (and it doesn't show it in your screenshot) but it sounds kinda like the system is stuck in "waiting for root device". I experienced that problem with a couple of different iso's when I tried them. The only way I could get past it was to enable AHCI in my BIOS.

is this working out of the box? Do you use patched ACPI kext?
In my case (EP35-DS3R) it works only with Kaly install and patched kernel. With vanilla it is not working.
The same on retail instal with chameleon. Sleep is not working in any combination.

The only thing I'm using to boot, other than nvinject, is the extensions.mkext file that was in the extra folder on Elastics ~Galaxy_Boot.iso.

I only tried it with HDAenabler.kext and I get kernel panic at boot.
For AppleHDA.kext I think I read somewhere that it will not work when loaded from image or /Extra folder. It must be placed in System/Library/Extensions.
I am not sure about this so if someone can confirm.

I tried HDAEnabler and ALCInject with patched different AppleHDA's. I even tried AppleAzalia ( I think that's what it's called). Nothing worked. I'm just gonna get an iMic and be done with that.

Just move/copy them to Extra/Extensions folder, fix ownership and permissions
Then change info.plist that is located in Content folder inside kext
Add (or change if it is already there) at the end:

This must go before the last two lines

I'll give that a whirl. Thanks.

What's the proper way to remove a kext from the Extensions folder, by the way? Move it to the trash and then delete the extensions.mkext in the Library?

Thanks again,

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks and to report a (mostly) successful install.

Using Elastics most recent (I think) ~Galaxy_Boot iso I was able to install from retail and update from 10.5 to 10.5.4 with software update. I used the Kalyway Chameleon_DFE_for_Hard_Disk.dmg with Elastics extras and now I'm booting from the HD.

Restart works, sleep works except for no IP on wake and shutdown mostly works with the OS shutting down but not the hardware, sometimes.

The only real problem I'm having at the moment is no audio. I just can't seem to get it to work and I think I've pretty much tried everything.

I do have a couple of questions if anybody has the time to answer them. I have my video card working with nvinject. It sounds like, from the reading I've done, that EFI strings are becoming the preferred method to use. With Chameleon installed using the Kalyway tool, can I use EFI strings?

Second question, If I want to add a few kexts to the Extra folders at a later date, what do I have to do to get them to load? For example, If I want to move nvinject from the extensions folder to the extras folder, what's the best method to do that. I tried several times over the last couple of days to do just that, but I could never get it to load.

Thanks again to everybody who's work makes this possible,

ohhh... almost forgot, I used OSx86 Tools to modify my "About this Mac" but something got buggered. Now all it says is "About_Box_Processor_Label: About_Box_Single_Processor_Field_Format". I tried using the tool to restore it. Same thing. Any idas n how to fix it? I tried following the instructions for doing it manually, but AboutThisMac.strings file seems to be missing. At least it's not where it's supposed to be.

phhttt - that was more like one step forward two steps back. The system got really flaky with AHCI enabled; finder locking up, couldn't eject cd's, shut down and restart seemed to stop working, weird stuff. So I shut it back off.

I tried installing the IntelCPUPMDisabler, kext into the extras folder using the Kalway Chameleon DFE hard drive thing again (already used it once on this install), but the kext didn't load at start. How do I add kexts to the Extra folder on the hard drive that Chameleon is supposedly using and get them to load? I figured since they were appearing in the folder they would load, but they don't seem to be. I'm missing something somewhere, I just can't quite figure out what.
