#1885592 ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 Ultrabook - fixes, mods, tweaks, etc

Posted by cyf on 02 February 2013 - 10:21 PM

Is the USB ethernet dongle that came with the UX31A working for anyone? Do I need to do something to make it work? I don't see it under devices in the Network preferences. Take the AX88772.kext out from the enclosed file and put it in your IONetworkingFamily.kext. Rebuild and fix permissions, etc. Thanks for the guide, but I'm really struggling to get it working, I've been trying for hours to get Clover running but without results, I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I add Clover to the boot option as I should but I always get a black screen and nothing happens. I've got some questions that could help me: Yeah, once you mount the EFI directory, you need to copy your EFI files from your USB stick into that partition. In your case, it would be /mnt/EFI. Basically, if you can mount the EFI partition on the desktop, you can even drag the EFI folder on your USB drive over to the partition (drag the EFI folder so it copies the folder, not just the contents)....

I already have one. sudo gpt -r show disk0 does show the right info at index 1. Okay. Just FYI, mine shows: start size index contents 0 1 PMBR 1 1 Pri GPT header 2 32 Pri GPT table 34 6 40 409600 1 GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B 409640 497389408 2 GPT part - 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC 497799048 2319111 500118159 32 Sec GPT table 500118191 1 Sec GPT header Which "EFI stuff"? And copy from where? You're successfully booting from the USB key in UEFI, right? It has an EFI folder, correct? Copy the "EFI" folder to the EFI partition. Make sure you copy the folder as a folder, not just the contents. Interestingly enough, I think Clover looks at ANY volume for the existence of an "EFI" folder at the root of the volume, and will list that as a boot option. That is, I've had the EFI folder accidentally in both the EFI partition (named "EFI") and my...

Gentlemen (and Ladies): Have been giving a lot of thought re: User's Guide and reading through the thought-out and constructive posts. From someone that's read--or at least skimmed, a lot of the past articles, it seems that Clover has grown in leaps and bounds from something that has been a "hacker" tool to something that is becoming more user friendly to common users every day (and with each revision). With that being said, I have also seen more and more people become aware of this great tool (I certainly mention it to others because I think it's so awesome -- 3TB drives are now in the $99 range on Slickdeals! so more people will undoubtedly switch to GPT and UEFI goes hand-in-hand with it--also Windoze 8), and along with that, more "basic" user questions. I also see questions being asked in multiple forums, which leads to difficulty for users to figure out where to find information. It also seems that different forums have different audien...

Slice, could you add some warning to Install post to use USB stick for first Clover installation and tests? I've seen cases where users are running install for the first time directly to HDD and then they mess with existing working Chameleon boot. The best way to play with and test Clover (or any other booter) is to test from USB stick. Prepare MBR formatted USB stick with one FAT32 partition and then install Clover there. This stick can be used for standard BIOS Clover boot and for UEFI boot. Once Clover is set up on that stick and all is working good and you know what you are doing, then install it to HDD. Plus UEFI boot post: until somebody makes a better guide, it would be good to add link to this one: http://www.projectos...682 FYI: "That USB stick should have standard Clover installation." was confusing, because you don't actually need the "bootx" files if you just want to boot under UEFI, right? Actually, the whole set of instructions is complicate...

Oops hit "post" too soon... That is for the issue where shutting down/sleeping OSX resets the CMOS memory to defaults and I don't think this is applicable to the Zenbook, although this did affect my Gigabyte board with psuedo-UEFI BIOS, however I have yet to test it with the latest beta full UEFI BIOS which has its bugs :( Anyway, I haven't had time yet to get OSX installed but if I can't get OSX to understand local time vs. UTC, I may have a go at writing a UEFI module and an Clover interface/hook to allow the boot loader to deal with the time/clock before the OS gets to see it. That should solve that :) Ahh, thanks, that makes sense now. BTW, I can confirm that the lock of the PowerManagement is in the bios: http://www.insanelym...os/page__st__40 However, I can't seem to flash the modded bios--EZ Flash says it's an old bios (it says the same thing even if I try to flash the same version), and trying to flash using AFUDOS or the UEFI version will gi...

Clover keeps looping back to its self when I click on the HDD for it to boot post install. What am I doing wrong? Had that issue a while ago. I think it was related to not having the right drivers in the efi folder. Sorry, this was a week ago, during my first attempt--where I was even more clueless than I am now, so I can't be sure. Are booting UEFI? BTW, very informative site. Will have to grab (yet another) cup of coffee and start reading.

about clover, i dont use this and my patched chameleon works great with any system why not use that? [EDIT] now USB adapter works great =) :star_sunglasses:, still no appstore logging Windows 8 Just a note about Windows 8--I don't know if it's because of the all the random restores, etc., but it seems like a lot of stuff doesn't work with it and it's crashing quite a bit. I may do a "Refresh" operation or just go back to Windows 7. I need something stable to fallback on. ASIX Adapter Glad you got yours working. Ahh well, I was able to boot ML into safe mode from the Beast 1.5.3 install I made a long time ago. Reset the BIOS and I don't know if it did anything. Here's the IONertworkingfamilly.kext I "rescued" from it. Hopefully it will help others with the ASIX AX88772B USB to Fast Ethernet Adapter.  IONetworkingFamily.kext.zip 694.56KB 52 downloads Clover Don't mess with Clover if things are working for you.
