Repair kext permissions from single user mode?
24 March 2013 - 03:07 AM
Hi,
I have a GTX 560 and I posted here a few days ago about intermittent freezes following the 10.8.3 update. After a few minutes on Google I realized that I was experiencing the long-reviled "Fermi freeze", which experienced an uptick following the release of 10.8.3.
Stupidly, I attempted to install a bunch of kexts and frameworks listed here[1] , but they comprised a solution for 10.8.2, not 10.8.3. Upon my reboot I was greeted with glitchy, unusable graphics performance. The finder would reboot about twice every second.
So, I booted into Windows to attempt to restore the kexts and frameworks from their backups. Using the Paragon HFS+ driver, I restored my earlier backups of my Extensions folder and the three frameworks that were replaced by the tonymac download.
I'm almost certain that, were I able to restore my kext cache and repair permissions, my Mac partition would boot without issue. However, I am unable to do so.
Upon booting in single user mode, and fsck'ing, I am unable to run 'diskutil repairPermissions /'. The error message displayed is:
Unable to run because unable to use DiskManagement framework. Common reasons inclde, but are not limited to, the DiskArbitration framework being unavailable due to being booted in single-user mode."
I also tried to selectively repair just the Extensions folder with this[2] method (starting with the command:
chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/
) -- but now the sudo command has stopped working! I get the error
sudo: unable to initialize PAM: No such file or directory
{censored}!
Does anyone have any idea what the hell is going on? I had previously experienced a problem with kexts misbehaving, but I was always able to fix it by restoring the kexts under Windows and then repairing permissions in single user mode.
I also don't have a repair disk with me, so I'm up the creek without a paddle, as it were. I really don't want to use Windows for the rest of my life...
Native Adapter Woes - AR5BXB112
20 January 2013 - 11:09 PM
Hi all,
I'm currently running a Hackintosh with an AR5BXB112 wi-fi adapter (this model) and I am pulling my hair out trying to get it to work on a PCIe adapter.
I can't figure out whether it's a hardware problem or a software problem. Initially I had thought that the issue was that the wireless card was not appropriately seated in the adapter and that it needed to be screwed into the PCB to be properly grounded. After acquiring some screws I found that they made no difference in my reception.
Basically what will happen is I will turn on wi-fi, the computer will recognize and connect to the wireless network (giving me a few moments of connectivity) and then immediately disconnect. The same thing happens regardless of whether or not my screws are attached to the PCB. I experienced similar symptoms with another card, the ARBC94321.
So, in a moment of desperation, I removed the little metal shield on the card. That made a difference.. but an odd one. Now, when I connect to wi-fi, I get a full strength signal, and it says I'm connected to the Internet... but when I unplug my Ethernet cable, I stay fully connected to the wi-fi network, but it says that I've lost my Internet connection.
I'm sort of at my wit's end. I've been through a TP-Link adapter and two wi-fi cards. Is there some software configuration thing that I can try, or is my PCI adapter likely faulty? Should I put the shield back on? Should I just up and buy a WDN4800? Gah.

Another guy with sleep/wake problems
17 August 2012 - 03:19 AM
Hi folks,
After buying the 550 Ti and realizing that neither graphics acceleration nor sleep/wake worked, I sent it back and exchanged it for a 560 (non TI) assuming that those things would finally work.
While graphics acceleration now works fine, I'm having trouble getting the computer to wake up after it goes to sleep. When I sleep the computer the fans, LEDs, and drives are still spinning, but the screen goes black and the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. Pressing the volume buttons on the keyboard doesn't make any noise, so I know that the computer isn't seeing the input devices. As of yet I have no way of waking the computer up besides holding down the power button and rebooting.
Information:
Hardware:
Core i5
Zotac Nvidia 560
8GB RAM
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H-MVP motherboard
Software:
Mountain Lion 10.8.0
Bootloader: Chimera (I know, I know, sorry)
CUDA drivers successfully installed
Any kexts I should try to get sleep/wake? I installed the one that was supposed to support the 560 from that kext installer that supports a lot of different things... but it didn't help me.
Or could it be a BIOS issue? Is there anything I absolutely must have in the 77-series motherboard's BIOS in order to have functional sleep/wake?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Installing Windows 8 after Mountain Lion
12 August 2012 - 03:24 AM
Hey folks,
So I installed Mountain Lion on my new Hackintosh assuming I would be able to put on Windows later. Foolish, foolish me...
In my computer I have a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I have split both of them into equally sized partitions, intending to use half of each for system files and storage, respectively. Both have GUID partition tables.
I can boot into my Windows 8 install USB, but it won't allow me to actually install to any of the partitions on any disks, throwing this error:

Yes, I googled after that, finding a number of potential solutions to my problem. Most of them looked like this. However, the Windows command line gave me an "element not found" error after running "bootrec.exe /fixboot", and no amount of setting the partition in question as active would solve that.
So, would anyone care to enlighten me as to what I need to do to get Windows 8 up and running? Since I already have Mountain Lion running on the SSD I'd prefer not to wipe that, but I can do whatever with the empty Windows partition, of course. I'll wipe it if I have to, though.
OK, thanks in advance guys.
