#1893929 [worklog] The PowerMac G5 "Talulah" Project

Posted Mr.D. on 04 March 2013 - 01:49 AM

have you tried removing it from the original case and then mounting it to the TeslaConverter shell? I bought some standoffs (binding posts they are called at Home Depot) and used the same method for mounting the PSU as I did the MB. Worth a look-see!

I had not considered a thread with links to guides from other sites... that is definitely something to consider! With regards to G5modders.com, remember that InsanelyMac is about waaaaayyyyy more than just modding G5s. and indeed this particular sub-forum is about more than just G5s as well. I am sure that WhatTheTech can back me here when I say that, while all good forums will have overlap, not all forums should be exactly the same. Each site can leverage each others strengths and also help to fill gaps left by the other. Thanks for the ideas - I'll be getting this ball rolling hopefully this week.

can you shorten the standoffs at all? one of the things I didn't do when I epoxied my standoffs was to remove the excess material from the bottom of the posts, since I was reattaching them on top of the aluminum not in the holes. Not much of a difference, but its about 2 mm - enough that I notice it when attaching a PCIe video card. Looks like you have a HUGE gap. If there is a way to easily shorten the standoffs, that would be my choice. I know you have anodized and painted most everything by now so this may not be ideal - but think about that misalignment if you ever get a video card that has plugs right up to the edge - you'll be unable to use it... and that would be a bummer. you don't want my opinion on the USB 3.0 header - because I am firmly in the 'cut nothing' camp. EDIT why don't you attach those USB ports to a blank PCI bracket? the MacPro has 5 slots, your MB has only 4 - so you wouldn't be sacrificing a slot down the road, and you now have...

SirKeldon said:I know terrorgen at the forum is offering prebuilt rear mobo's but I'll have to ask him the exact size. Idk, still unsure on what to do with the back, honestly. Not sure if that is vaporware or not... too may times have I been foiled by big plans and no execution on the part of others... time will tell there. --Regardless, it wont fit. When you put your MB in like you did (like I did as well) by reusing the original PCI expansion slots, it's about a half of an inch between the MB and the original G5 I/O area. His PCB is wider than 3/4 of an inch. And if I remember correctly, the components he is sourcing are that size. someone could maybe find smaller components, but damn its tight back there. I ran one USB extension cable out thru one of the holes to a hub. I still don't know what to do back there and I 'finished' my mod 3 months ago!

#1893667 Apple wins big in US, strikes out worldwide

White_Lotus said:If you can sue McDonald's because your coffee is too hot, who is to say Apple can't sue for patent infringement? You see people in China suing McDonald's because their coffee was too hot? You see people in London suing Starbucks because they spilled hot coffee on their lap? In other countries you are responsible for your own actions, in the U.S. it's different. Yes, welcome to America where nearly anybody can sue anybody for anything. I think that your comparison that includes China in the list above is a little misleading... as China is basically a single party, part socialist, part capitalist, authoritarian/ totalitarian oligarchy with figurehead leaders. The U.S. is different - thank the 8 pound 6 ounce newborn infant Jesus for that! very nice - and I love the improvised spacers. If only you had heat shrink tubing in that dark grey color - then you could just sleeve the washers!

#1893111 How do you say the "X" in OS X?

Posted Mr.D. on 01 March 2013 - 12:51 AM

interesting about the hard code to recognize roman numerals after OS... I say OS 'ex'... mostly because I am a lazy speaker and ex is easier to say than TEN. Yeah, I know... I'm that lazy.

Please don't abbreviate like that in your future posts. I'm typing from my cell right now and don't feel the need to use texting abbreviations. For those of us old foggies who have a hard enough time with plain ol' regular English, please use real words. This also helps the many foreign readers as well. Thanks and good luck!

Posted Mr.D. on 26 February 2013 - 02:02 AM

It would seem redundant to post a how-to on how to write a how-to, however, in an effort to clean and organize the Mods and Overclocking sub-forum up a little bit, I'd like to share my ideas on this, and ask for your input. The idea is that eventually there will be a [How-To]/[Tutorials] sub-forum right under the Benchmarks sub-forum that people have ignored for the past 6 months. What I would like to do is sift thru the posts below, find some examples of nearly or all-the-way completed [How-To]s and then pin them. This would put them at the top of the forum, in theory getting the most reads. The idea then would be to have the original author make any final tweaks or additions that should be made to the original post, and after a period of 'final commenting', the [How-To]/[Tutorial] would be promoted to the sub-forum above. The catch being that those tutorials would be locked - no edits or comments allowed. If there were changes that needed to be made, they could be di...
