10.8.1 and ALC202A audio

16 September 2012 - 10:00 PM

Hello again!

I have a pretty solid install at the moment. There's just one thing that is starting to bother me a bit. Every time I restart, or power down, it's a gamble as to whether or not I'll get into OS X again with just one boot. The ONLY way I have found to get audio fully working, is to use Voodoo (Terrible way, I know!) I searched high and low for a way to use anything but voodoo. Nothing I could find worked, most things broke the installation. Problem with Voodoo is, sometimes you'll boot right up, sometimes you'll kernel panic 20 or 30 times before you get in. Making it even harder, the panics are NEVER the same. They are always different when they happen. So it's not as if there is a constant panic I can google. Once it's up and running, it's rock solid, has absolutely no flaws, and it never crashes.

Does anyone know of a solution to get AppleHDA working for the ALC202A or at least a way to get Voodoo to behave better? I've searched and searched, and tried SO many different things, at this point I'm probably reaching so much that I've missed something. My machine doesn't use any kind of custom DSDT, if that makes a difference.

Some temperature questions

13 August 2012 - 06:11 PM

I've searched in a few places, and it may just be my wording, but I can't find anything telling me exactly what I want to know. So forgive me if this has been asked before! :) I am mostly curious if running on Mountain Lion, my desktop will still have it's temperature safety features? I know Windows machines use the BIOS for fan controls right? So if I was in Windows 7, and the temps ever got too hot, the machine would shut itself off before causing damage? If I understand right, real macs use SMC for this?

I never really checked my temps running under Windows. I could always hear the fans kick up if I ever did anything really processor/graphics intensive, so I just never thought about it. But I've noticed under OS X, my machine never turns the fans up at all really. I've attached a photo of what my temps are under normal circumstances/idle. But every once in a while when I do something fairly intensive, the temps shoot up very high, and the fans never seem to change speed.

So what I am wondering, is if first of all, should they ever get dangerously high on the processor or graphics card, will the normal safeguards keep things from getting damaged? And second, is there something I can do to make it so that the fans come on as they should? I've read about people working on the DSDT but I don't have one (or at least if all hacks have one, I never modified it) so I am not sure how to proceed. Thanks! :thumbsup_anim:

[Solved] GTX 560Ti & Mountain Lion

26 July 2012 - 08:49 PM

Hello!

I've been racking my brain trying to get my 560Ti card working in Mountain Lion. Some people seem to have it working OOB, but no such luck here. I've tried all the boot flags applicable to video issues, no luck. Can't seem to find any kexts for it either! So I can't get native resolution, or any kind of acceleration. If I load anything with any kind of graphic movement (the scrolling bar in Safari for example) it immediately crashes the system (with no error). It just freezes the screen until I force a restart by holding the power button.

Can anyone help me figure out how to possibly edit the working kexts for Lion, to work in Mountain Lion? Or maybe show me what I need to do to come to a solution that might work? Thank you!

(Solved!) Some trouble booting without USB on Lenovo G570

20 July 2012 - 10:39 PM

Hello everyone! :)

I've been having a bit of a tricky problem with my G570. I installed Lion on my desktop (using the process on this site!), and it went rather well. I managed to get absolutely everything working without a hitch. But with my laptop, I have been far from that lucky. First, let me make it clear I have searched high and low on this issue. I have found several solutions for people with similar problems, but none of their solutions worked for me.

The way I am installing to my laptop (and did to my desktop) is not via a distro, but using a retail copy of Lion 10.7.3. I use ###### from TonyMac, and the install process actually goes fine. No other method of install in fact, works for this laptop. I've tried them all, even distros. After install, my graphics work fine. I am able to get my wireless, sound, keyboard, mouse, battery, and (most parts of) sleep with kexts. But I have two issues, one major one. I cannot boot without the ###### USB plugged in. I have tried everything I can think of. I have found a few DSDT's for my model laptop, none work. They cause boot to fail regardless of flags. Same story with Chimera. I've tried Chameleon in the past, it doesn't work either. They cause either freezes, or kernel panics upon booting. If I use verbose, it stops in a few different places, seems to depend on the roll of the dice as to which it breaks at.

The other is updating to 10.7.4, it breaks the installation in the exact same way. I can live with being stuck forever at 10.7.3, but I can't live with having to use a USB every time I want to boot or restart. :wallbash:

I would really appreciate help as to where to go from here. I am new to this world. I managed to get my desktop working perfectly, and my laptop mostly, so I am "fairly" competent with OSX86 installation and my way around the processes, but I am not by any means knowledgeable.

Thanks in advance! :)
