Microsoft Transceiver 3.0 for Bluetooth and OS X

Hi All,

I tried searching in the forums for an answer and couldn't find one. So any pointers appreciated.

I have Vista and OS X. I use the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 with the Transceiver 3.0 for bluetooth.

My built in bluetooth module got corrupted and hence I went for this usb bluetooth device.

On Vista, using the broadcomm drivers I was able to connect other peripherals such as the plantronics 590A stereo bluetooth headset and my bluetooth mobile phone.

On OS X, this USB is not recognized as a bluetooth device at all. I installed the Intelipoint 6.2.2 software and still the bluetooth device is not recognized. It is only recognized as USB and works with the mouse alone.

Is there a way I can get this to be recognized as a bluetooth device.?

Thanks,

-AR

This is common with bluetooth sticks coming with mice and keyboards. They have two different modes of which have to be set from the driver. On some you can hold the connect button on the bluetooth stick if there is one when you are booting or turning on your computer.

After going through some of the IOBluetoothFamily.kext contents, I tried the following. Any help is appreciated.

The bluetooth transceiver that I have has a vendor ID : 0x045E (1118) and Product ID : 0x0708 (1800 - Dec).

Inside IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Content/PlugIns/BroadcommBluetoothHCIController.kext/Contents/Info.plist I found one of the properties named "Microsoft 2.0 Bluetooth USB Dongle". The vendor ID matched the above but the Product ID was different. Hence, I changed the Product ID to match the above and rebooted and when I plugged in the dongle, the machine just froze. I tried keeping the bluetooth button pressed and then plugged it in, and still the machine froze.

Next, I went into the system profiler and tried to see if there was any 0x0708 product id match. But unfortunately there was none. There was only a "Microsoft USB hub" with a product ID of 0x0707. And so I tried changing the product ID in the Info.plist to 0x0707 (1799) and rebooted, and it gave me a kernel panic (both with the dongle plugged in as such and with the bluetooth button pressed). If the dongle is not plugged in, it boots to OS X, but the moment I plug it in, it just froze the machine.

On Vista the product Id shows up as 0x0708 and the following are sub products 0x0707 and the wireless mouse with another product id. All of them have the same vendor id. But on OS X, in the profiler, the 0x0708 doesn't show up at all.

Any ideas? This is the only thing that is keeping me from switching to OS X full time.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

-AR

I also have this mosue/dongle.

Mac OS could see the dongle but it can not use it a bluetooth, but it can connect to the mosue, I press the dongle's button about three to five seconds and it's led get flasshing, the I press the Mouse Discover Button and after few senconds they are paired.

I am not getting to work as BT yet, since my Internal BT is working.

I also have a MS BT mouse with the BT dongle V 2.0 it has no button and it is recognized perfectly by Mac OS and works perfectly with all kind of devices, the dongles is the one that came with the second generation of MS BT mice, those blue ones.

Also there are a lot of very cheap ones that does not have a button and work perectly.

I have an IOGEAR BT dongle that is recognized by Mac OS but it can't pair anything. :(

I discover how to make it work with Mac OS, yesterday I atached to a Mac Pro, and I can pair with the 8000 mouse but in BT restricted mode, then I install parallels because VMware don't want to connect to this dongle.

Once it is connected to the Virtual Machine in Parallels I installed the Windows Drivers from MS, then there is a option with the MS mouse software with "Advance" button you can modify the behaivor of the dongle to Full Bluetooth (regualrly is in restricted mode), after applying the changes the software ask you to disconnect the dongle and then reconnect it, in that moment the dongle is recognized by the Virtual Machine as Bluetooth EDR module, after disconnecting from Parallels the bluetooth menu appears and you can pair any bt device.

I disconected the dongle to attach it to another Mac and hacks it preserves the behaivor. So I gues that the only way to make it back to previous mode is using the Win software.

I ran into the same thing now.. I bought the mouse to use with my macbook Pro, which works fine. Now I tried the dongle on my iDeneb 10.5.5 PC, it shows up as product ID 0x0714 under USB, but not under Bluetooth. Macgirl, do you mean that after setting the device from windows to full Bluetooth, and unplugging it, it resets to restricted Bluetooth again? Then the same thing would happen on a reboot I guess?

yeah noticed that too : when configuring it in Windows into BT then rebooting to OSX, it kept BT mode and not restricted mode... But rebooting or unplugging it = resets it so kida useless. It's a shame because I have a MS Keyboard + MS Mouse, and in restricted mode sometimes the mouse lags when i press keys on my keyboards (specially in games) while in BT mode, it's fine.

Eventually, I ended up getting a normal usb bluetooth dongle and paired my keyboard with it while i kept my mouse with the MS one in restricted mode. So far it's the best thing I could do (except i cant use the keyboard in my bios). You can always pair the mouse with the normal BT dongle and the keyb with the MS one so you have keyboard in the bios but I didn't do that because in my case, the mouse behaves differently (mouse speed isnt that fast, even with the MS drivers, and scrolling is slow) than Windows.

I think there is no solution unless somebody really writes a special driver to choose the dongle mode (theorically, a new BT drivers isnt needed since OSX recognizes it if set in BT mode in Windows).

IF you have Windows:

Download and install the latest Intellipoint software. ( Don't connect your Transceiver before installation )

Now After Installation.

Connect your MS Transceiver

Open:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint

Now Open btwizard

1. Click Next to Continue.

2. Check "I don't want to connect my mouse at this time"

Now let it Configure your Transceiver

3.Now go to Devices and printers and open your Mouse settings (The page where you configure the mouse buttons)

(Can also be accessed using control panel or desktop).

4.Now go to: wireless

5. Bluetooth Connection: Click Advanced.

6. Check "Hardware-managed Bluetooth Mode"

7. Click Apply/Ok.

8. ShutDown Windows

9. Connect the Transceiver where you've installed OS X (If you are dualbooting then just restart and boot into OS X)

10. Boot into OS X

11. Now you have a working bluetooth, recognised by OS X and fully functional. :)
