New Vista Build, New Problems

Well the new build of vista is out, and according to Nakfull Propaganda, Microsoft may have taken out 32bit efi support, and this build may even be harder to implement than the last. Seems for every step forward we make there are two steps back we have to take.

After reading his blog on this, I gather that he also hasn't been able to install Vista on his normal, windows based PC - let alone a Mac! Also, I find it very hard to believe that MS would remove this from a Vista release just to make sure that Intel Mac users can't install it on their computers. Extra $$$ for licenses on more computers is their [MS] goal. But, you never know.

I honestly find it hard to believe that EFI support would be removed, at least for 32 bit systems. It's going to have to be put it at some point, and even if it isn't this month, it's coming soon.

At any rate, 5308 is still a smart idea to, erm, "get" due to all the new features. Use your MSDN account to grab it, otherwise do it the old fashioned way.

So if is, let us know how ?

I mentioned EFI in another thread but I'll also add it here as this thread is more on the subject...

"I don't see why people think EFI has been removed or reduced though. The same EFI files that were in 5270 are also in 5308 and they HAVE changed in size so there have been edits of some kind to them (also a new file in the boot folder called bootsect.exe has appeared though I have no idea what it is for). As Nakfull never even got as far with his copy I have no idea where he got the idea EFI was removed from x32 Vista."

Why put OSX on a PC? Because its fun to try. Besides no offense but I just don't prefer OSX as my primary OS. Everyone is free to install what they will. Its hardly defiling unless you are simply a MS hater (or vice versa on the OSX on a PC side). Now lets get back to the task at hand. Still no luck on my end btw.

Why defile mac hardware by putting a micro$oft os on it?

A little thing called compatability. OS X might run smoother and look nicer, but that doesn't change the fact that with only 3% of the market share, there is a lot of software that just wont run on it and for some of us, that software can be pretty essential.

If you're not having any luck, then none of us will. It does indeed sounds like 32 bit support has been patched out, so we're just going to have to wait again until a future release.

If they removed EFI on IA32 support (which I would think is unlikely), we could still use the older Vista CTP's EFI bootloader (which helped us boot up to the "loading files" of the installer) and hope that the current Vista CTP supports UGA.

Its better but it still suffers from the same EFI/UGA problems that 5270 had.

Hope Apple starts shipping a PowerMac with a separate graphics card soon ;) - will be easy to replace with one that supports VGA. This won't be a solution for MacBook, iMac and Mac mini, but definitely for testing and getting dual boot to work.

I think the graphic card (ATI Radeon X1600) in the iMac supports VGA, the firmware does not.

The card itself is not the problem. For any piece of hardware, the firmware is what makes it support or not support something.

But anyway, has anyone successfully flashed a VGA BIOS onto the iMac's X1600?
