Quiet graphic card advise

Hi guys,

I am about to get my second machine to run leopard. this is what i am getting:

Asus p5k e wifi

Intel quad 6600 2.4ghz

kensington 2x2gb 800

wd 500gb sata2 for leopard

seagate 500gb sata2 for vista

and the problem:

the xfx 8800gt pcx sli 667 which i have tried and it is very very noisy.

The only safe alternative is the 8600gt 64bit (fanless) way cheaper and obviously no noise at all.

My question is, could you guys recommend me a fast good graphic card that does not make too much noise, that plays nicely with kaylay dvd. I am happy with a bit of noise from the fan, I just cannot bear the "8800 hairdryer".

I don't really want to use a cooling system that is hard to install, I prefer a quieter card.

Is this setup good for leopard?, I have been reading quite a few posts and seems a safe hackintosh, am i correct?

Thank you very much in advance.

I haven't been able to get my 8600GT to work yet other than in VESA mode. I would stick with Radeon X1xx0 or GeForce 7xx0 if you want it to work easily.

Thanks QuietOC for your reply. do you know if the 7xx0 or radeon x1xx0 are reasonable quiet ones??

Cheers!

Pretty much any video card can be made quiet. XFX tends to use noisy fans, but they do warranty the card if you swap their heatsink for something else. My XFX 8800GT 256MB was fairly quiet for a stock fan.

Most GeForce 7xx0 cards are slighly more power efficient than the Radeon X1xx0 cards. The coolest/cheapest GeForce cards tend to have little annoying fans, but you can also find them with fan-less heatsinks. I'd look for 7900GS, 7600GS, or one of the 7300 series (GT, GS, LE) depending on how much 3D performance you want. The newest Radeon HDs (3850 being the best) use less power than any of these, but I am not sure how easy it is to get those working yet.

Hi,

Well at the end I´ve got the 8600gt, so far I´m really please with the hackintosh machine.

It is very quiet indeed. Preformance wise not problem at all and the install was so easy.

QuietOC what version of 8600gt do you have?? mine is the point of view 8600gt 512mb 128bits fanless.

I have one kp with the 10.5.2_NVkexts+.pkg then I installed the NVInstallerV.41.pkg all good!! :)

Thanks to all of you guys, I am learning so much from this forum!!
