AMD Systems

I am looking to upgrade my 2400+ Athlon MP, and would like to dual boot to OS X on the new system.

I was wondering if people that have successfully (or un) installed OS X on their AMD based system could give me a brief list of their hardward and what compatability issues they ran into (if any).

Hopefully with the feedback from forum members I'll be able to tailor my system to be as hassle free as possible.

I was hoping to get a 3800+ X2 Cpu, and a 6800+ NVidia GFX card -- the MB is really up in the air though i do like ASUS.

Thanks!

I have dual core Opteron 170 OCed @ 2.75ghz. Problem is that OSX stutters with both cores enabled, so at the darwin loader u have to mash F8 and type in "cpus=1". Smooth as butter after that. If you get an NF4 based motherboard dont expect your LAN to work nor Sata. I have to have Windows on the sata and OSX on and IDE drive. I am not sure how the ATI based boards due but you may have better luck there.

Complete system:

opteron 170 @ 2.75ghz 1.5v

1gb OCZ ram

evga 7800 gt (come on mac drivers!!)

dfi nf4 ultra-d (great board just not for osx)

hard drives and dvd burners no one cares about...

I run 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 on a:

AMD X2 4400+ @ 2.375Ghz

Asus A8N SLI board (NVidia 4 Sli chipset) (Onboard Lan not supported, USB+FW working, sound in and out OK)

3Com 905 Network card for OSX

Leadtek NVidia 7800GT (In Vesa 3.0 mode)

1Gb Dual Channel OCZ memory

Maxtor ATA HD for OSX

Not seen by OSX:

SATAII HD (windows)

Adaptec 29160 Scsi controller and connected HD (Linux)

Stutter problem here as well....

See sig. If your priority is a mac os x compatible system, go with an intel system. If you go with AMD, it is likely that SATA, ethernet, and sound will not work. Also, there's no graphic acceleration support for Nvidia cards and certain ATI cards.

You might find the following useful:

:)

@empire29: Be careful what motherboard you choose. My board, for example, is based on a ULi single chip IO controller, which works, BUT, the IDE controller is only supported by the generic driver. What this means is I can only use my primary IDE port (i.e. 2 devices), and only in PIO mode (i.e. about 2Mb/s tops). This renders OSX useless for anything that uses the HDD a significant amount.

I believe some people have had successes getting non-intel boards to work in UDMA mode, but read the wiki VERY carefully before purchasing.

Thanks for the feedback -- have a couple questions:

1) I noticed that the Onboard Lan tends not to work on AMD compat. motherboards -- is there a PCI Ethernet NIC that is recommended?

2) NVidia's gfx acceleration doesnt appear to be well supported, the loss of "acceleration" would only be reflectedin 3d game play/3d rendering i assume?

3) Can anyone comment on PCI Express ATI cards that may or may not work?

4) Has anyone gotten SATA to work on a AMD MB? If so, what MB? Any luck with third party PCI SATA cards?

Thanks

opteron 170 @ 2.75ghz 1.5v

1gb OCZ ram

nice, we have similar systems.

i used idlehalt=0 to get rid of my stutter.

theres also a thread kicking around with other options, like fn=3 for forcenap to tell the processor to take a break when its not being used.

i find that idlehalt=0 works perfectly for me, so i dont need the other shiznit.

Onboard USB works. Can use PS/2 or USB mouse & keyboard. Onboard ethernet doesn't work, but I had a cheap D-Link NIC handy. nVidia GeForce FX5500 looks great, but will only run at 60Hz refresh, and up to 1280x1024. This is through the DVI connector but with a DVI-to-VGA adapter to a VGA monitor. Sound comes out of only left speaker. Tried adding nVidia kext, but no improvement, those are for 10.4.1.

OS1: OSX 10.4.3 8f1111a (JaS) on PATA

OS2: XP on SATA drive

Processor: Athlon64 3100 Hammer (SSE3) 1.8GHz

Motherboard: DFI K8M800-MLVF (VIA)

Video: GeForce FX5500 128MB - YES, but only upto 1280x1024 @ 60Hz

Disk controller: Integrated onboard PATA - YES

Disk controller: Integrated onboard SATA - YES, can see XP partitions but cannot install/boot from it

Network: PCI NIC Realtek RTL8139 (D-Link DFE-530TX) - YES

Network: Integrated onboard VIA VT6102 Rhine II NOT WORKING

Video: Integrated onboard S3 Unichrome - NO "family specific matching fails"; "display not usable"

Sound: Integrated onboard VIA VT8233/A AC'97 LEFT CHANNEL ONLY

Firewire: Integrated onboard VIA VT6303 Fire II IEEE-1394 - YES, but OSX doesn't mount the partitions of attached hard drive - maybe because formatted NTFS?

I use a realtek 8139 compatible card, because it works well in Linux - fine in MacOs out-the-box

Kinda - MacOs uses gfx accel for rendering the GUI, so it will be a little sluggish with an nVidia. Should be fine if you have a fast PC tho'

Unsure about this. Check the wiki.

No idea, but I can say with 99% surety that ULi/ALi based chips will be non-starters. People have had success with certain nForce boards afaik. Again, check the wiki.

I have SATA with my nforce3 board (Gigabyte K8NSC), I had to edit AppleVIAATA.kext with my SATA controller hardware ID and that's it... Seems like "VIAATA" is a dupe, as this is the 2nd mb I do this trick and it still works. My other mb was a Jmicron SATA2 controller(JMB360).

I presume it's a generic driver, though I would like to know if it also works on yours, ie other nforce3 and nforce4.

ASRock K8S8X - Audio not working

Athlon 64 Sock754 2800+

Sapphire 9600 Pro 256MB, not really happy with the Solution, deleted all Drivers because of the Mouse tears...

3Com Ethernet Card, don't know the specs

512MB PC333 Ram

it's not the newest setup, but i have a 12 inch PB and a mac mini so i don't have a problem with that :poster_oops:

Is there anyway to do this within the ISO because I would like to install on to my SATA drive using my 10.4.4/10.4.5 bootable ISO. Unfortunately I don't have an IDE drive...
