MacBook Air

Go on then...

Okay, here we go:

1. Fixed RAM. If I buy a US$1799 laptop, I'd like to upgrade it and keep it for a long time.

2. Only 1 USB port. That was okay in 1999 with the iBook but not now as USB is everywhere.

3. No internal CD drive. I am aware that you can get the external one but that would talk up the 1 USB port so that you wouldn't be able to do anything else that's USB related.

4. No built-in ethernet. Sure there's the adapter but again that takes up the 1 USB port. If I were to transfer files from a MacBook Air to an iMac G3 using ethernet and wanted to transfer a file or two from a CD, I would either need to put the files from the CD onto the MacBook Air before the ethernet adapter or unplug the adapter in the middle of the transfer to get the files from CD. Not as simple as just having the CD and the ethernet right there.

5. No firewire. Sure I don't use firewire because all my peripherals are USB but it's nice to know that firewire is there just in case.

6. Not as powerful as the other MacBooks. I can get a normal MacBook for a lot cheaper that a MacBook Air and I can get a 2.4GHz CPU with a MacBook or 1.8GHz with a MacBook Air.

7. Not customizable. With the PowerBook G3, it had hot-swappable bays. The MacBook Air doesn't. With the iBooks, you could lift the keyboard to access the AirPort card and the RAM. Sure many people may not want to customize their MacBook Air but I think the idea is cool.

8. Difficult to replace battery. With the iBooks, PowerBooks, etc. you can remove the battery in a matter of a few seconds. Not with the MacBook Air. It's like replacing the iPod battery. Extremely hard to do at home.

9. Too expensive for what it gives you. As mentioned earlier, I could get a MacBook with a faster processor than the MacBook Air for US$700 less.

10. Too thin, would get too hot. I know for a fact that all laptops get hot at some stage but when you attempt to cram a computer into a few sheets of paper, you can imagine it would get much hotter than average MacBooks.

Just my 10c.

Are you kidding? The thing barely even gets hot. When just surfing the web, you can touch the area on the top where the CPU is and it isn't even hot. On the bottom I would say that it isn't more than 100ºF.

OK, so i have not read every post, just the ones that are like, rubbish.

How can the MacBook Air be too thin? The New Ultra Portable from Apple is built for the wireless world, not the be a massive paperweight that you have to use a crane to pick up. 3Ib... Its amazing.

If you look at the progression of RAM expansion over the last say 10 years, the default has gone from from 128MB RAM, to now 1GB as default. 2GB RAM will be the default for generic PC's in about 4 years, and is now the full default for Apple. Apple laptops generally last 2 to 3 years longer than other PC laptops, as apposed to 3 days and the PC laptops are out of date.

Now, lets get on to the optical drive deficiency. The is no deficiency what so ever. The MacBook Air is build "for the wireless world" and every need is taken care for, Time Capsule takes care of backing up. Remote Disc, this amazing feature takes care of your need for a DVD drive and generally users who own the MacBook Air, like Numberzz, how either a *eew* PC, or Mac with a disc drive. Thus creating no need for one. While slimming down the machine.

The no ethernet thing. Ethernet has been around since, like, forever and it now, in my opinion now needs to be phased out. There is no need for ethernet, due to the fact there is 802.11 n and Bluetooth built in, so you can connect anywhere. There is wireless popping up everywhere and currently there is a rumor going around that SF will get free wireless.

No firewire. Who cares, most things are USB now, and since it is an ultra portable, you have a desktop machine for your FW & USB needs.

OK, customization, the MacBook Air is packed with 2GB RAM, and an optional SSD. All Apple Products are "cool" out of the box.

the iPod may not have a replaceable battery, however i think the iPod has done just fine without one. One of the perks of an Apple product is that it can be taken back to the store and have it fixed right there.

To my knowledge, there is somebody going round insanelymac.com with a quote in their sig,:Your not accepted into the mac community until your spend $3000 on a $1500 computer. Who cares what it costs, your not being forced to buy it at all.

Too Thin? Apple makes thin products, look at the iMac, where did the tower go? The Mac mini, everything in a small pachage.

The MacBook Air, everything is in that little package, and if you look, year after year, Apple stuff gets thinner and faster.

Too Hot?! Only you opinion, and if you think it is too hot then download and install SMC Fan Control and bring the temp down.

How can you put in your "10c"?! Its 2c... there is ever a smiley for it. :P

All you points have gone out the window.

Think Mark

this must be my longest post. :P

i have to agree to ilikelmo25 and many others here. we support an apple reseller here in germany and i once got a chance to testrive an air for a couple of days. it was sitting right next to my fairly new mbp 2.4ghz and thinking about, that the mbp was even a hundred bucks cheaper than the air, it's just a big fat no-go. just because it's that slim?! well, there is no accounting for taste but that's about it.

and firewire does have advantages over usb(-2.0). it's faster (fw-800) and it's peer-to-peer. some of that might change with usb-3.0 but it's not done yet.

If you mean phasing out Ethernet in portable devices, that may have some merit, although I'd still disagree. For desktops, especially in corporate environments with 100+ machines - not a chance! At least not to be replaced by wireless communication.

Think Mark, you speak the truth, buddy!

anyways...

IMHO, all those complaining about the MBA being too expensive are just mad that they can't afford one. Or that they feel like they're wasting their money. If that thought ever crosses your mind, this baby isn't made for you. Shut up and move on.
