randal24
Yep, I can say after a night of hacking about with device IDs and various other efforts that the 8800 GTS G92 won't work with this method! Looks like NVInject is the only way at the moment, which is a shame because although it does work I get an annoying hang in the middle of boot for about 2-3 minutes before everything starts working again. So are you saying if I was to flash my card, I'd be able to get your method working? Thanks for all the help so far, OSX is totally new to me and this tutorial has help me loads in getting my head around how devices work on Leopard. Much appreciated. Edit - Just installed the NVInject 0.41 installer with the patched 10.5.2 kernel, no longer getting the hang at boot. Only bummer I can see so far is that it detects the card as 256mb, which I'm not overly fussed about. Power save works on the display now, and I'm pretty sure sleep/restart/shutdown is going to follow suit. Not all bad, rather go the EFI route but if this works well as a stop gap it's not the end of the world!

If you read that post by Uzul you'll see that there is a problem getting the flashing to even work. So no. Don't do it, AFAIK. But if you've got your card working with NVinject, I'd say roll with it. Performance-wise, there is no difference. To get 512MB to show up, you'll need to edit the Info.plist in NVinject.kext. It's beyond the scope of this particular tutorial thread, so I'd rather not get into it, but if you google NVinject 8800GT VRAM (don't use quotes) you'll find some threads that talk about how to make it work. Cheers, agra
twonine
The kexts just have the 8800GT device ID added to them. Most users have problems with this part of setup, so I've done it for them. If you have a working setup already with NVinject, then they wont do anything new for you. Hmmm... I ended up skipping the kext replacements (NVDA and GeForce kexts). I had Leopard Graphics Update installed, added my EFI string to Boot.plist, and removed NVinject. My System Profiler shows 8800GT 512mb correctly. I'm not sure if I have to make any more changes or not now.

I think it depends on the brand of the card, but using my kexts wont hurt users who don't need them
aspirina750
Hi guys, I´m having a slight problem with the card, I had it working with NVinject, but I always wanted to simplify and use EFI, I did all the necessary steps but when I boot up the screen shut´s down, I tried both ports, original kexts and the ones provided here but nothing works, could it be that you need the EFI 8? or it works with the one that came with iAtkos? Anyway great guide!
agrafuese
I've never tried to quote myself before, but you've inspired me to give it a go (from original post): REQUIREMENTSBefore you continue, make sure you meet the following requirements: EFI v8 installed and working. This may work on older versions of EFI, but I can't promise anything. So maybe I can change that to "This WONT work on older versions of EFI"...? Castigator
Could you please put your pack on a mirror.. Mediafire is not workin' so well at the moment. I used your pack before and it is so easy. Thanks

Edit 1: I´ve tried everything, using both plist, original kexts, modded kexts... but the screen always shut´s down, the system works well, it even sleeps but no screen and I tried connecting 2 screens. It works well with NVinject, so i don´t know what could be the problem. Any ideas?

agrafuese
Hey guys, no problem, glad I could help out. @aspirina750: Is NVinject.kext inside your Extensions folder? If so, remove it. Other than that, not sure what else to say. I'd be really surprised if you couldn't get this working, so maybe try going over the tutorial one more time from the start. Have you tried plugging just one monitor into the left port (not two at the same time)? If you still have trouble with it, maybe ask around and see if anyone with iAtkos is having problems getting GFX-EFI to work for them. I am not familiar with that release myself. @rraleighh: I've never had sleep/wake working because my system doesn't support it, but restart and shutdown work fine. Could be mistaken, but I don't think those things are related to video card. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.
thepunkerguy
I know this is going to sound really stupid, but if someone could explain it real quick that would be great. Exactly what does this thread do for 8800GT 512MB users that http://scottdangel.com/blog/?p=23 (NVInstaller V.41) doesn't do already? I have an 8800GT 512mb card and used the NVInstaller V.41 to install my card and everything seems to work, unless I am missing something I don't know about. I am new to Mac OS so I could be missing something and not even know it! I run dual monitors with different resolutions, adjusted their positions, and all the fancy visual effects seem to work fine. What benefit would this thread add for me? Thanks guys! - Mike
Pardus
I ran the Apple Graphic Update before I saw this post. =( The card seems to be working fine, with acceleration and QE and all that, but Profiler shows only 256MB Virtual memory instead of 512MB. Can I just go through your guide over again? I saw some other fixes on the forum but this guide looks a lot more straightforwards and promising. Too bad I didn't see it sooner. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have vanilla install from Kalyway 10.5.1, ran Kaly combo update 10.5.2 and updated vanilla kernel too.

What benefit would this thread add for me? Thanks guys!- Mike Absolutely nothin' haha. GFX-EFI strings are just for a more streamlined approach. Maybe other cards benefit somehow, but AFAIK the 8800GT works the same in either scenario. It's just a matter of personal preference. Some people say GFX-EFI improves boot-up time, but I call BS on that, as it's more or less the same for me. So I'd say skip this method unless you're looking for a way to fill time. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have vanilla install from Kalyway 10.5.1, ran Kaly combo update 10.5.2 and updated vanilla kernel too. Go for it. The reason it is only detecting 256MB is because there needs to be a modification to the NVinject.kext file that you are currently using. That's beyond the scope of this tutorial, but if you follow my method from start to finish, you wont need to worry about that, since the files provided detect 512MB automatically. Good luck! agrafuese
Hmmm, you're the second guy running iAtkos who's had a problem with this. You running EFIv8? Older versions don't work, apparently. If that's not the problem, then it's got to be something else related to iAtkos. Try to get in touch with the other guy. You'll see his post on the 2nd page, his name is "aspirina750". If you guys figure out a way to get it to work on iAtkos or if you can't get it to work at all, please let me know and I will add some info to my tutorial. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Vinícius Ferrão
I think that I'm running EFIv8. I cannot prove because I simply don't understand some things I use Vista Bootloader to load OSX, so I dunno if EFI is loaded correctly, but I have installed EFIv8. agrafuese
No I ment 8800gs. But is there any hope 4 me?? Wow, I had to look that one up in google. I'd never heard of the GS before, oddly enough. This tutorial won't help. You'd need a few things: your device ID (which you can find in windows, do a google search on how). All of your Geforce and NV* kext files will have to be modified with that ID if they aren't already there (again, beyond the scope of this tutorial, so look it up), and you'll also have to create your own in.plist with the specifications of your VRAM. If you can get your card working with NVinject instead, I'd suggest that, as there's no difference performance-wise, and it's quicker to get up and running. I think that I'm running EFIv8. I cannot prove because I simply don't understand some things I use Vista Bootloader to load OSX, so I dunno if EFI is loaded correctly, but I have installed EFIv8. Again, not my field of expertise
