heatpeep
After doing some searching, others have suggested booting to safe mode or single user mode in order to boot without a graphics card; however since I'll be running a server, I wanted to see what can be done other than that so that I can reliably boot sans graphics card. The board I'll be using is the venerable Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 version 1.0 (no onboard graphics either). I'd really like to get this up and running then use remote desktop or screen sharing to administer it so it can be used like a server should be: headless. I'm thinking maybe an edit of com.apple.boot.plist may be in order, or perhaps a deletion of some kext's or maybe something really cool that I don't even know about would make this work. I'd rather get some help from the community before borking my install. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

~pcwiz
I think every sever has some form of graphics, whether it be a card (unlikely) or onboard graphics (likely). Why not just buy a cheap $50 graphics card and put it in?
heatpeep
i think that's what i'm going to have to do. i found a thread on apple insider dating back to 2003 that was about this very same topic. alas, i guess some things just don't change... for reference here's a link to that thread: http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=25666
heatpeep
Just as an update, I threw in a $25 nvidia pciE card and it boots like a champ. I did hate to have to give in though!
~pcwiz
You can still use it without a monitor But a video card is an absolute necessity.
