Otherwise I love these chocolate ones (the recipe says coconut islands, but there is no coconut in them) I make that is from a 30 year-old family recipe. In my first year in the US I lived in Chicago and I found McVities milk chocolate digestives in a couple of stores in Park Ridge, as well as Kerrygold butter (somehow American butter isn't the same, I think they don't culture the milk or something). I can't remember the name of the store now, but it was a welcome taste of home. Also I could get PG Tips tea, HP sauce and Heinz Beans (the English sort). In NY I can get all of those things from Stop'n'shop or Shop-rite where they have 'ethnic' foods aisles. Plus genuine Caerphilly, Wensleydale and Cheshire cheeses. I couldn't survive without those! Problem with the MCDigestives is the 80 Kc (calories) each - I know, I just read the packet

Metrogirl
OK, I apologise in advance for this being off topic - just a reply to Cyrana The store was Morningfield's in Park Ridge, I found a photograph. They definitely had the McVitie's but it was in 2000 so I can't promise they still have them. Butter in this case meant butter like you put on bread! Kerrygold is actually Irish butter but it's the closest I can find to English butter. Compared to US butter it is a little more salty, definitely more yellow, not as sweet and it has a hint of sharpness. I've found every single US butter to be almost tasteless in comparison, I think the secret is that the Europeans 'culture' the cream, or let it sour (in a controlled way, like 'soured cream') ever so slightly before churning. It really is different. In case anyone hasn't read it, here's my definitive guide to 'same terms with different meanings' on either side of the Atlantic: US-UK-US dictionary -including those that will get you into big trouble if you (mis)use them. As this is my sixth year in the US I think I've come across most of the real howlers and I've included plenty more terms that catch visitors out. I know I made a proper idiot of myself at first! When I went back to the UK with my (American) Significant Other, he said to an assembled group of friends "Sarah's full of spunk". I was horrified! In my dictionary, you'll find out why...
