CompCrasher86
I have one of the best overclocking motherboards in socket 754 history, the legendary MSI K8N Neo Platinum. Everything on it except firewire is native with OSX. I have an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ plugged into it. The original speed of processor is 2ghz. Through the bios, I have it overclocked to 2.3 and sytem temps idle at 39 celcius. How far do you think I can push it?
mtotho
have one of the best overclocking motherboards in socket 754 history Much higher than 300mhz lol. You may want to get a better cooling device.. but i assume it can atleast get to 3GHz (knowing intel processors, i dont know about amd)
CompCrasher86
Yeah thats the only reason I'm holding back. My case can definately accomodate a good cooling system I just cant afford it yet. Right now I have one case fan and one cpu fan, probly not enough The bios options go up to a 1.5ghz overclock
capt_cope
In my 939 expirence I saw just under a 1ghz overclock. I had my 3800+ X2 running at 2.8ghz stable. But that took gobs and gobs of vCore, and a TT Big Typhoon (best air cooler at the time) I wouldn't count on getting to 3ghz. I never cracked that barrier with any AMD chips, though I know others have. I did get a single core up to 2.95ghz but that was hardly stable, ran super pi and it would crash every other time. Either way, best of luck. And grab some good overclocking ram while you're at it.
Azurael
It probably won't go that much higher than that. Most 130nm K8s were hopeless overclockers. They really did seem to cherry-pick the good chips for the FXs. Although that is assuming yours isn't a Venice - I don't know much about the 90nm chips. I only got my 3200+ Newcastle up to 2.5GHz with water and loads of vcore...
QuietOC
I don't know much about the 90nm chips. My 90nm Athlon 64 LE-1620 overclocks to 3.2GHz, but it is a socket AM2 chip (really a rebadged low voltage single core Opteron).
CompCrasher86
Yup I could only get it to 2.35ghz. Any higher and it wouldnt boot. I dont think this is a source of overclocking, but all of the motherboard's USB ports have totally stopped working. I am using USB PCI cards as a temporary solution
vbetts
If it's a Venice core, the most you can hope for is just that 300 mhz, that's what mine will overclock to and still remain stable.(Amd Athlon 64 2.2 ghz 3400+ Venice 939) Edit- You probably fried bits and pieces of your mobo. Is it not seeing your usb ports at all?(Not the usb expansion card.)
CompCrasher86
Yea the ports are still getting 5v power and they are recognized in the Task manager of Windows. Whenever I plug something in it goes "Windows can not recognize the attached device... It has malfunctioned..." something along the lines of that. The BIOS is also not recognizing the keyboard I have plugged into the ports. Right now I am using a USB expansion card as you know... Do you think it is worth my time to send it in to MSI, or should I buy another expansion card to have 8 total working ports?
vbetts
You most likely fried some of the mobo. I would suggest just sending into MSI, or getting a better one. If you're on 754 though, I suggest going to 939 and grabbing the Opteron 165 and overclock the HELL out of that.
CompCrasher86
ahh I know, well I am done saving up for a lenovo T61 So i'll get that instead. (no intention of overclocking laptops yet lol) Even if I switched over to 939 I would have to basically buy all new hardware, and I don't see a point in trying to retro-fit this thing so yea. The Biostar TForce 6100 was the best overclocking S754 motherboard I had. I sold it and got faster AM2 parts for less money.

Not really, if the memory is either ddr400 or ddr333 the 939 will do fine. You would just need both a new processor and a motherboard, and you'd be set. The problem with that is, 939s aren't so easy to find anymore like they were.
CompCrasher86
I would probably have to get a new graphics card too because as you may see in my sig I have an AGP graphics card. How many good socket 939 mobos can I find with an AGP slot in them? Oh and yea your right the memory will work fine If you guys really think I should switch could you suggest a good Processor+mobo configuration with a $300 budget? vbetts
You'll most likely have to use 3 websites for worth while prices on parts. amazon ebay tigerdirect Now, for $300 you can get the cpu, mobo, and a video card. For a video card, I suggest going to Newegg for that.
CompCrasher86
Thanks, I'm looking through the wiki to find some nice compatible boards
