I have my friend's Dell Inspiron 1501 with everything working including SATA!!!

That's right, sata.

The only thing I don't have right now is QE/CI, which I am going to work my hardest to get working.

Also, I have Photo Booth with a logitech quick cam communicate stx fully working.

I installed it on a usb hdd first.

Booted off that. Then moved AppleVIAATA.kext into IOATAFamily.kext.

I had to add the dev/ven ID's to the VIA kext for the sata controller.

Did the whole chown/chmod thing, and deleted mkext kextcache thing.

Rebooted and bam!

I then partitioned the internal hdd to MBR. Did a disk restore off the usb hdd to the internal hdd.

Activated the partition in terminal and that was it.

This post is for 10.4.10, the information doesn't apply to older versions.

You will have to experiment.

Where there is a will, there is a way.
