jrv
My wife gave me a simple Cam-oculars from Restoration Hardware. The device comes with windows software for ArcSoft PhotoImpressions 4.0. There is no other discernable way to download the pictures from camera to computer. Of course, I have a Mac (running leopard 10.5.2 IIRC). I installed Darwine 0.9.5.5 from the dmg at thisismyinter.net, and it installed with no problem, and the test apps work fine. When I try to install the software from the disc, running autorun.exe gives me a nice looking X11 window , with a main buttons down the side, a title bar, and a main window of some kind. Except, , The title bar has funny marks in no known (by me) orthography, the frame is not movable. The buttons on the side are readable, viz: "ArcSoft Imaging Software", "Install DC driver", "Browsing CD", and "Exit" When I push any of the buttons (except "Exit"), I get a message box that says "Cannot find specified file: Make sure the path and filename are correct." "Exit" actually exits normally. I tried stepping through the various folders and setup programs on the disc, separately. Each one runs install shield, and installs stuff in the Darwine tree. BUT, when I try to run any of the programs from the Darwine applications menu, say Photosmart 4 (which is supposed to be used to download the photos), I get an Error window, "Photoimpression exited with an error. Look at the log window" or words to that effect. The log window starts with some unhandled page fault messages ... I saw on an Ubuntu forum that Photoimpressions runs under wine on Ubuntu "with some tweaking" (not further specified). Also, I note that usbprober shows the camera application on the USB port, but neither iPhoto nor ComExtract can see the camera on the port. I've tried several different versions of the Darwine windows kernel (2000, 2003, 98, with no discernable difference in behavior). Would appreciate any tweaking suggestions! Can give more information if it would be helpful in sorting this out. Best, John Velman
