FujitsuFreak
Why doesn't Apple release OS X for PC's? I don't see why not. If Apple actually release OS X for PC's, I am sure ALOT of people (including me) would buy it. I understand that Apple is a business, and businesses want to make money, but I am sure you would make money by selling just the operating systerm (compatible w/ PC's). I know you guys are all going to flame this, but I see it as a pretty reasonable business move. Point 1: Apple wants to make money by selling their software built onto THEIR OWN COMPUTERS. -I understand that, but you can still make a lot of money off of selling your operating system. -People still will buy Mac's for many reasons. They are pretty good looking computers that sure punch a pack! Point 2: Someone post a point that I can prove Thanks. Again. I am just wondering your opinions on the matter. Gabotron
Because too much support can cause problems. Thats why people complain about vista, they do their best to be compatible with everything but all that causes confusion and issues. So, Apple only support specific hardwares to ensure there are no driver issues or what not. And, of course, to ensure you buy from THEM. It's win win for them. nate256
Apple would end up spending more time on getting it to work with more "parts" than getting it working well! You would sacrifice quality over versitity!!! I would rather have quality! thats what make Apple stand out over Microsoft! I don't think it would be a good move, and it wont be happening, at least any time soon!!
consolation
It's an IM tradition that once a week someone starts this topic. If you search you can read through all the arguments ad nauseam. It boils down to 1)They licensed the OS in the 90s - it nearly bankrupted the company, 2) They are a hardware company, that's where their profits come from - the OS is one of the incentives for buying it. (MoC)
It would cost them too much for support and stability on all x86 PC's. If you think Vista is driver hell then please imagine something like this....
FujitsuFreak
They are good with drivers though. I mean they ported all the OS X drivers to Windows in order to use Boot Camp. So they just do that, but in a reverse order with PC drivers.
Gabotron
Yeah, trading 6-7 drivers for a apple machine versus the millions of possibilties windows has to deal with... its not just a matter of being good.
Headrush69
I know you guys are all going to flame this, but I see it as a pretty reasonable business move. You're gonna get flamed not for mentioning it but because this question has been asked about a million times. (Every month it seems.) It is amazing that the professional business management employees at Apple can't come to the same conclusion since it is so reasonable to so many average joes. Embio
when I did business studies in high school and college, I quickly realised that the answers boiled down to 'money' or 'more money'
l2uso
The answer is really simple: Apple is a HARDWARE Company, not a software one. They only ensure their hardware works the best way adding some remarkable software, that's it. Mac OS X is what it is only because it works in a well balanced hardware. That is the only way you can minimize OS issues (minimize not erradicate). That's why Microsoft is what it is: full viruses, software glitches, hardware glitches, not for bad but for trying to offer an ALMIGHTY solution for a extremely wide hardware market. Microsoft is a SOFTWARE Company, and Linux is the not-so-ugly Unix's face but the most stable, you choose. If you want to keep wishing Mac OS X, let Apple keep doing it in his own way, otherwise Mac OS X will become a buggy OS too, not as buggy as MW but very close thanks to the less changed UNIX side of Mac OS X. Remember Unix is powerfull but don't do miracles... My advice: work for buy a Mac, you wont regreat, I assure you. (I have 5: Mac 512, SE, Powerbook 165, G5 PPC, MacBook Pro, all working ;-) My 2 cents...
Lostgame
Oh, h'yup, the inevitable return of the 'why doesn't apple do OSx86?' And the inevitable return of 'they're a hardware company.' Well, I think all that needs to be said has been said.
InorganicMatter
Because it would turn out like Linux: a buggy piece of {censored} due to the million version 0.0.0.0.1alpha drivers preincluded on the installer. Keep it closed. I like hacking it on my PC, it teaches me a lot and keeps the OS at top-notch quality.
Mr. Harrison
Because it would turn out like Linux: a buggy piece of {censored} due to the million version 0.0.0.0.1alpha drivers preincluded on the installer. Ha ha, that's true. I think Linux is cool and fun to fool with, but so far no distro has worked 100% perfectly. SuSE 10.3 - Blank screen Fedora 7 & 8 - Planet Penguin Racer makes it crash. Mandriva 2008 - Full screen games makes X.org (the graphics subsystem) crash Freespire 1 - Lsongs, the iTunes knockoff frequently crashed. Kubuntu - Doesn't work at all. This is what's good about Windows- everything you buy has this on it.
sxjthefirst
Sine anyone can buy just the OS why actively bar it from being used on non-Apple hardware (if I understand tight it violates their terms to even run it on a different hardware). Instead encourage people to run it on apple hardware and maybe a few other brands/platforms AND sell "at your own risk" for anyone else.

vbetts
Because buying a computer, plus the operating system together means more money! You can buy Mac for apple computers, but they want to make the money off of the computers, and operating systems. Microsoft does make money off of the pc hardware manufactors, but apple makes more money making their own computers, and selling them. Apple has always done this. Plus Mac isn't open source, this is just more ensuring that it's closed source. And as said before, bugs and issues. Let's take Vista for example. Vista's problem in the beginning, was mainly driver problems. Due to the millions of PC builds that don't all use the same hardware. Support for it is the reason, Apple does have to keep in mind support for the G4s up to the Intel CPUs still though. I wonder if they get tax breaks for doing this sort of thing...=]
