4GB of ram random crashes/freezes/kernel panics..

I had lot's of random kernel panics (handbrake, safari...)

I tested lot of things, at least I had to reduce my memory speed from 1033MHZ to 800MHZ FSB.

Now all works fine without kernel panics.

Having upgraded my AMD athlon 64 with 2GB mem to a dual core on a EP45-DS3 with 4GB@800Mhz last weekend. I thought, would having a much stabler system, until I started running Vuze.

 

Starting to get grey screen (immediate reboot) out of the sudden.

First I went into the direction of application which cause high I/O on network or WLAN and stuck the system, but it didn't convinzed me.

 

Then I found some infos about the isssues the JMicron driver does have. Unfortunately, I need to use some PATA until end of week.

 

To stabilize my system I followed the advises to test with a memory test tool. I choosed rember.

 

Just after I clicked the rember start button on the default mem size settings, the system got stucked.

I then bootet with maxmem=2048, and afterwards with maxmem=3072. On both settings, the whole test of rember went fine through. Even opening Vuze in parallel and doing some other stuff doesn't bring the system into my "BSOD".

 

So, end of week, when getting rid of all my PATA devices, and switching off the JMicron in the BIOS, I'll try boot and rember again on the whole 4GB.

 

 

P.S. I voted again to test with the patched JMicron .kext, as I trying to be as much as possible vanilla. Some of bad effects of patched things: Until yesterday my shutdown worked fine, until I applied a azalia patcher to get the onboard sound working. I do have now a 2-channel output, but shutdown doesn't switch off the PC anymore....

 

 

Havin now just SATA drives, and tested again with rember. No grey screen or kernel panic anymore with the full 4GB.

(I didn't even remove the .kext ...)

It might be your power supply unit being not powerful enough..creating an unstable system...or you are overclocking your system too much

 

why?

i did a lot of testing now i'm sure it's because of the 4GB ram

i use kalyway 10.5.1 now fully updated to 10.5.2 with the 9.2.0 vanilla kernel and also the graphics update

the problem is not there ,i had the random crashes (freezes) even with 10.5.1 (and a lot of ppl)

is it because of kalyway's release and 4gb of ram? some kext that it's modified?

please share your opininions i'm sure a lot of ppl had problems with 4GB of ram and random crashed ,now everybody just use maxmem=2048

or i missed something and can resolved?

Ok, this is interesting. I did all this:

 

* Disabled the JMicron controller in BIOS.

* Removed the JMicron.kext from the Extensions folder. Deleted Extensions.mkext.

* Configured SATA as AHCI.

* Disabled memory remapping in BIOS.

* Booted with maxmem=3072.

 

My computer still freezes occasionally. Rember (memtest) completes successfully. Do i need to physically disconnect the IDE drives to prevent the kernel panics?

 

I have an ASUS P5E mainboard with a X38 chipset.

Load up XP and run Prime95. See how long it runs for. Rember only tests Ram not your actual system stability.

 

I was getting loads of KPs - Rember and memtest would always pass flawlessly. Then I'd be browsing and it would KP. So I started Prime 95 and it bummed out after 10mins. So an obvious problem with my system as opposed to OS X not liking the ram.

 

My solution was to sort out all my FSB, voltage and ram speed settings. Ended up overclocking to 3.2 to get my clock speed and ram speed at 1:1. MB Voltage needed to be lowered as did the core voltage and ram voltage. Passed 4 hrs in Prime95 with no errors.

Sometimes lowering memory speed does the trick.

 

Or upping or lowering the RAM voltage. Some motherboards don't supply enough RAM voltage when you have too many sticks. If you raise the voltage, it can often help compensate for that.

So I'm not the only one...I thought my IDE HDD was dying...so I bought another one...I remember I couldn't install Kalyway on my SATA HDD so I bought IDE again. After installing and upgraded to 10.5.6 I got kernel panic again when unrar large files. I only get to know the problem when I did a search on the internet and found this thread. I also added 2 x 1gb of kingston ram and running 4gb ram. Now I'm running maxmem=3072 and everything is smooth as of now. Will continue to run maxmen=3072 till someone has a cure for the Jmicron problem.

Its now working...4gb ram in Leopard with IDE HDD on Gigabyte 965p DS3 mobo. All I did was to replace the JMicronATA.kext and AppleVIAATA.kext on the below thread by Slashack.

I'm getting random freezes and kernel panics on my system too:

 

Specs:

 

ASUS P5K-E Wifi/AP

Q6600

4 GB DDR2 800 OCZ RAM

XFX GeForce 9500GT (Chameleon Graphics detect support and 9xxx series kexts added)

Disabled wifi

Disabled Jmicron (don't need it, everything is on SATA)

 

The system works like a charm, but randomly crashes, I could stress test it for 24 hours with dozens of open apps and it will be solid as a rock, or I could just be browsing safari after a fresh reboot and in 15 minutes BAM! Kernel Panic. It's hard to say what is causing it, so I've been checking log files:

my GigaByte UD3R works after I disabled the IDE-controller in BIOS (gigabyteSata2). I had 2 HD - 1 SATA in AHCI mode (macOS) + 1 IDE - I am running now only Sata.

I am very happy after experimenting for 2 months...(ram downclocking, ICH-voltage downclocking, cpu-voltage.....)

 

iDeneb v1.4 (10.5.6) updated to 10.5.7

 

an other OS intalled (iDeneb 10.5.6) updated from Apple, seems to work fine...(testing it...)
