The specific Shuttle model is: XPC SG31G2. Shuttle now has an ePay store, and it is selling refurbushed SG31G2's for $150 Buy-It-Now, but they were accepting "Make Offers" as low as $125, to which they made a "Counter Offer" of $129 as their absolute-rock-bottom price. I think they have a dozen XPC SG31G2's left at this moment. A Core 2 Quad ... haven't decided which, a Q6600 or a Q9450 ... will be going into the Psy****, and the Core 2 Duo Q4500 recovered from the Psy**** will be going into the Shuttle. 4 GB of Crucial RAM will be going into the Shuttle. Haven't decided on a video card yet, but the GeForce 7200GS 256 MB in the Psy*** is satisfactory for my purposes. I'm going to start out with PATA devices in the Shuttle mainly because I already have these available, and I already know these will work on a G31-based box as my Psy**** has PATA devices as its second optical drive and its backup hard drive. I am using large eSATA drives (1-1 TB, 1-0.5 TB and 1-0.4 TB) on my Psy****, and I will be shuttling these between my Psy**** and the Shuttle, as my media "work in progress" files are resident thereupon. The specific Shuttle model is: XPC SG31G2. Completed initial build. 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) Crucial 800 MHz DDR2 RAM, and recognized as such. Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz processor, D0 stepping ("SLACR"), but not recognized as such by "About This Mac" until the patch was installed. Operating cool as a cucumber, what with Shuttle's ICE "heat pipe" cooling technology. ALC888.text and Taruga's patcher worked, but DVD Player cannot see any devices, which also happened on my Psy****. Booted 10.5.3 drive from my Psy**** with great difficulty (a copy of the Psy**** boot hard drive). The Shuttle and the Psy**** are both G31- and ICH7-based, but the similarities end there. LAN not working at all. Using Airlink101 AWLL-3026 USB 2.0 dongle, for now. Successfully downloaded several application updates using Apple's Software Update. Not at all happy with the integrated video, so I will be trying GeForce 7200 GS from Psy****, tomorrow. This is necessary in order to go beyond 1024 x 768. Not using SATA at all right now, but I will be installing two iSATA to eSATA adapter cables so that I may access my media data, which is stored on eSATA devices, and is accessible to all my machines. The small form factor and the easy stackability of the Shuttles was a significant factor. (Ever tried to stack two G4 Macs? Ever tried to stack four G4 Macs? It can't be done ... neither two nor four). Got the same $129 price from Shuttle_Store for the second SG31G2. They may have one or two left. ALC888 (Port 2) working, thanks to Taruga's 1.20 patcher and ALC888 dump Nothing appears in "About This Mac ..." however. Taruga's ALC888 AppleHDA.kext installed using Kext Helper "About This Mac ..." now shows the various ports. Everything seems to work as expected. Which is more than can be said for the Psy****, which still shows no audio, although the audio works for applications, thanks to Taruga's patcher and dump. Tested built-in Firewire using my Fuji S2 Pro digicam as the source. The built-in application worked as expected, and as required. External SATA (eSATA) tested using one of those import iSATA to eSATA cables. Several DVDs were authored using component parts imported on another Mac to the external 1000 GB drive. The quad core performance was better than expected ... a significant savings of "wall clock time" over the dual core Psy****, which, in turn, was an astonishing savings of "wall clock time" over the dual 1.0 GHz G4. This Shuttle is looking more and more as if it is ready for Prime Time, replacing two of my dual 1.0 GHz G4 Macs. The second Shuttle G31 is expected tomorrow. I'm going to have to name these guys. The names Enterprise, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavor (sic) come immediately to mind. (Columbia and Challenger crashed and burned, so those names are out). One name may be taken by the Psy****, presently stored operational, as is, I believe, Enterprise. Perhaps Discovery (for the "discovery" of true, production-level OSX86-based computing, on a Shuttle) and Endeavor (for Inspector Morse's never-mentioned first name). Or something like that. Thanks in advance! ::rayman:: Shuttle SG31G2s make excellent Hackintoshes, but these are not the most overclockable systems out there. I have since completed two Shuttles, and both are in production. Shuttle #1, named Shuttle Discovery (after the Space Shuttle of the same name) is a Core 2 Quad Q6600. Normally 2.4 GHz, I have OC'd mine to 2.6 GHz. The Northbridge is not the limiting factor as it is running at 1156 MHz. Neither PC2-5300 RAM nor PC2-6400 RAM would be OC'd, but I'm using PC2-6400 RAM, so that is not an issue. Shuttle #2, named Shuttle Endeavor (after the Space Shuttle of the same name, but I elected to use the Americanized spelling of Captain Cook's ship) is a Core 2 Duo E8400. Normally 3.0 GHz, I have OC'd mine to 3.1 GHz. The Northbridge is the limiting factor as it is running at 1377 MHz, about a 104 percent OC. PC2-5300 RAM would be somewhat OC'd, but I'm using PC2-6400 RAM, so that is not an issue. Although I started out with Kalyway 10.5.2 on Shuttle Discovery, I was not happy with the installation at all. I wound up with a more-or-less generic Leo install, with a lot of kexts borrowed from my Psystar OpenComputer (formerly OpenMac). The borrowed ones mainly addressed the video card (CI/QE is fully supported in hardware), and Software Update (fully supported). Shuttle Endeavor, which was completed much later as I was then awaiting delivery of the E8500, is otherwise a clone of Shuttle Discovery. Both have XBenches in the 160 range. Shuttle Discovery, with its four somewhat slower cores, will be used primarily for off-line rendering. Shuttle Endeavor, with its two somewhat faster cores, will be used primarily for on-line rendering. Otherwise, both have 3 GB of PC2-6400 RAM from two of the "usual suspects" memory merchants (spreaders on all sticks), a 500 GB Seagate PATA drive as master, and a Pioneer DVR-110D as slave. Each has a GeForce 7200GS video card as the on-board GMA3100 SVGA/DVI video is stuck at 1024 x 768 for lack of a suitable driver. On account of issues with the first two SATA connections, which are reserved for internal drives, and which are not at present used in my Shuttles, the eSATA connection is taken from the third iSata connector. External SATA drives are used for "works in progress", and 1 TB and 500 GB drives are available, and can be used interchangeably on the Shuttles and on my few remaining dual 1.0 GHz G4s. Future upgrades will be to replace the PATA internal drives with SATAs. A 20X Lite-On DVD burner, for sure, and possibly a 640 GB WD HD. If not the WD, then 750 GB Seagates or Hitachis. Oh, Temperature Monitor is installed on both, but it is pretty much unusable on the 45 nm E8400. It will read the HD's temperature, though. On the 65 nm Q6600, it will read all four cores' temperatures, and these typically run between 109 F and 118 F. The SG31G2 platform includes water cooling for the processor, and air cooling for the remainder. The HDs typically run at under 109 F, which is the ambient temperature inside the Shuttle with its case closed. The "small form factor"/"Shuttle Form Factor" SG31G2 product is a good one. Currently it has an Nvidia 7300GS video card, and a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse (will this cause any problems?). Do the updates work? Into the case I installed Pentium duo 2.5 , Hatachi 1t, and 4 gigs of ram. I also installed asus geforce 9400gt ,, I've ordered an airport card from ebay. I loaded in osx from an actual Apple OS disc. I used boot loader 132 to prep for the install and after it completed I loaded in Chameleon DFE for hard disc. total time for install 15 minutes. The Geforce 9400 card increased screen resolution to 1440 x 900. I added kext OHR which fixes shut down errors. And Software and Kext for the video card. I had an LG IDE dvd burner and usb keyboard. Surprizingly the ide burner worked in conjunction with the SATA drive no problems. This is a work in progress Ethernet does not work and sound I'm working on. I installed a QuadCore Q9950 at 2.83GHz and 4GB of OCZ RAM 800MHz. Seagate 750GB sATA and Sony/Optiarc DVD/RW sATA too (was hard to find a gray front panel ! ). I kept the on-board GMA3100 video... I spent hours reading across forums, and eventually, with some luck I got iATKOS v7 (10.5.7) installed, having ethernet working but not video/audio. Tonight I will see which kext is used for ethernet gigabit and wil let you know. I originally wanted to make a clean vanilla installation, so that I can update just like my original iMac. I first tried BOOT-132 and my Mac's official retail Leopard 10.5.0 / 10.5.4 discs, but failed to reboot. Can you please get me through the steps that you followed? 1. Boot with BOOT-132 (which one?) and swap DVDs. Partition GUID/install Leo. 2. Upon reboot, what did you do? I am stuck at the logo white screen...
