FujitsuFreak Posted February 10, 2008 Share Posted February 10, 2008 In the osk86 Wiki, it says that if I use the Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g mini card, it will work with leopard on a PC. So if I just buy the card, switch it with the one in my computer right now that doesn't work, Leopard will recognize it as an airport card, and I will be able to connect to Wi-Fi Networks and use the internet? inedible Posted February 11, 2008 Share Posted February 11, 2008 yeah, that's the gist of it anyway... on some laptops though, you might have other problems. OSX doesn't always know how to deal with mini pcie devices, and sometimes no matter what network card you put in, it might not work. Also, some laptops are only meant to work with one specific wifi card, and it won't work with any other model. (this is less common) Another thing might be your BIOS and its DSDT tables, which tells different OS's how to use certain busses etc.. I'm not sure on the specifics, but apparently most manufacturers don't put a lot of thought into their BIOSes and they end up broken, only working properly in windows. For an example, I bought an intel 4965agn mini pcie card to replace my atheros 5006x, both cards work in windows, but neither work in osx. There's either a problem with toshiba's bioses or something to do with my pcie bus is not supported by leopard. Like they are the same type of card so the dell one is able to just replace the intel one? and thats it? the antennas are inside the chip? and then i just install the driver in vista... switch over to Leopard, and I will be able to connect to the internet? inedible Posted February 11, 2008 Share Posted February 11, 2008 I've never used that card, so I'm not sure if OSX will detect it on its own, or if you'll need to install a patch or a driver for it... search the forums for the card name for more info on that... installing the vista driver is irrelevant to osx, but it's a good idea to just make sure it works. but yes, they're both mini pcie cards, you should just be able to swap them. The antennas are connected to wires that you plug into the card. It'll be obvious when you're taking out the old one, how they connect. before you go and buy a new card though, it seems some people have been able to get the one you have to work... check out this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=84072 there are people hard at work trying to write drivers for that card, and it seems some people have already been able to get it to work.
