Guys, in about 1 hour I am heading out to buy a 24" Imac and getting rid of the Dell XPS 410 that I have. I heared that the graphics card in the 24" Imac is upgradable. Please confirm if it is true in practicality. Also any links that you can give me that show how to do it will be great. I'll buy the Imac depending on what you guys say.

I am not much of a gamer, but I do watch DVD's and movies from the internet. Is this 2600 PRO good enough for that.. or is VERY GOOD for that or is it bad for that?

Please reply ASAP. Thanks.

There is no video upgrade at this time.

The iMac should be fine for DVD movies, and streaming internet content.

The question is what to do you expect to gain from moving from the XPS 410 to the iMac? Seems like a lateral move or even slight downgrade.

why do you think it is a downgrade? The processors are the same. true the graphics card in my xps 410 is slightly better (geforce 8500gt 512 MB). HDD in xps is 250 GB (never cared for HDD anyway because I have a router with a built-in hdd which is my main dump). so what else?

Because the XPS 410 could easily be graded (if desired) in the future to a level the iMac could never be.

I'm just asking what you are gaining from spending $1800+ other than a space saving design and 100% worry free upgrading.

If that's important to you, that's cool, I'm not saying anything is wrong with that, just seems like a lot to spend when you essentially have the same power level machine already.

Ok... In lieu of your reply, I have abandoned the idea of buying an imac. I went all the way to the apple store, used the imac there to check your reply.. and then walked out of the store. :censored2:

You were so close to getting a real, genuine Macintosh computer, and you blew it. Congratulations. :D

I can still get it. Money is not a problem. I make 90K approx a year... and if I were to purchase it, I'd be using a part of my tax refund anyway. But I just hate the idea of buying one (even though I want to desperately) when I have a nice shiny XPS sitting under my work station.. That is my dilema. Unless one of you guys wanna buy it? ;) I've tried selling it on ebay.. didn't get a single hit.

I really wanted to support Apple and get an iMac but I already had a 20" WS LCD and the iMac's video card was so disappointing I went with a Dell XPS 420.

I have a better system and have future upgrade options.

AGAIN: Currently there is no better video option.

yea, you are right. if it were for a good graphics card, I would have bought it. Nevertheless, I think I'll buy a good widescreen LCD to go with my xps-410. Currently I have 2 19" 4:3 monitors.

I guess I am finally gonna pull the trigger and get a 24" iMac. I was able to sell my dell xps 410 for 800 bucks to an office colleague.

I understand it has an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card. I am not a gamer, but do watch a lot of high quality videos and stuff. I am just cautious about the graphics card though. how well this graphics card would do on a screen as big as 24"?

Please give your opinions (espcially if you own one). Headrush has already replied, but I'll feel more comfortable with more replies for different members.

Thanks

If the post is in the wrong place, just ask an admin to move it. Making multiple identical posts makes things confusing: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=86395&hl=

My question is regarding the hardware.. hence it was posted here. It was also a question, the answer to which would determine whether I would wanna buy it or not.. hence I looked at it sort of a buying guide. That is why i posted in that forum too.

Anyways, feel free to move/delete.

It was a copy/pasted identical question in multiple threads which is generally frowned upon in most forums.

Nothing personal, just general forum etiquette. Hope you enjoy the new iMac. ;)

dude a 256mb video card is going to be way more than you need for simple dvd watching and internet streaming. It will even be passable for most modern games. My macbook with a 64mb integrated card can stream hd content, and play dvds amazingly. JUST BUY IT, you will not regret it.

so I pulled the trigger and bought a 24" imac with Intel extreme processor. Very happy with it so far. Love the glossy screen. Love spaces. Have installed an external jbl spot speakers which rocks!!. Also have an eyetv 250 plus usb tuner which is so-so. I was able to sell my 1 year old dell xps 410 for 800 bucks.
