A horrible mentality

"time to sit tight and wait for maxxus to do his magic! "

That seems to be the mentality that chokes this community. There are of course many many of you all who do a hell of a lot of good work but we need to kick this in the butt. Everyone should be doing their part not just waiting for maxxus lol. Even if you dont know what the hell you're doing, play with it. Download the 10.4.4 dmg and see where you can get, post it and things you've tried, look into finding drivers, learn how to code, search google for interesting bits of information that might be helpful to us. If the community is lazy and depends on a single person to do all the work then what happens when that person goes away? The community dies. We all have to do our part. Dont just wait - help.

Lets try to make a list of useful things that everyday-joe can do to help the community.

Good point you've got there!

The only problem is that 80% of the user's here are people who register themselve, so they can find a solution for they're problem. After they've found the solution, they stop posting here.

Maybe it's a good idea to make a sepperate develop section for registered users only.

This way we can try to set up a group of user's who are dedicated for development. :D

sigxcpu - He's only been here for a few days. Give him some time. :censored2:

But he touches on a good point that, frankly, has been bothering me for some time. A lot of people ask for help on this forum - which is great, that's one of the reasons we set it up - but few people are interested in actually helping. Compare the number of question posts in the OSx86 section with the number of Genius Bar guides or Reviews. See my point?

Several people have said that info needs to be easier to find here. That's a fine recommendation, but the great thing about having a forum and wiki is that you are able to fix those problems by yourself. Maintaining the site takes up most of my time - I have to leave the helping to others.

I love this forum - in my opinion it's one of the best (and certainly most exciting) Mac forums around. But everyong needs to pull their own weight. Help forums (and although we're not a dedicated help forum, we do give a lot of help) usually end up like just about everything else in life - 10% of the people pull 90% of the weight.

So the lesson learned is this - if this forum helps you, make sure you at least help someone else by the same measure. It'll make this an even better place than it is right now. :withstupid:

While I certainly agree in principle and have raised this concern before, this is nothing we really should worry too much about either.

If Maxxuss fails (god forbid, blasphemy, muhammed cartoons...), I am sure someone else will quickly take his place as reigning OSx86 hacker extraordinaire.

Furthermore, I know for a fact that other people are working on 10.4.4 as we speak.

I think part of the problem is that some people just want a quick fix because thats what they're used to, having it done for you. We live in a consumer age where things are done for you so you don't have to.

I remember when I was new at this and struggled for weeks to get it working and still failed. I had no idea it was an hardware issue (incompatible processor and chipset).

Then I discovered win2osx.net and OSx86project.org and the answers I needed were there. So I changed my hardware and got Mac OS working, but i was lucky and had very few problems, I still have problems (certain hardware) but there is currently no solution.

But as far as 10.4.4 goes I dont't even think I want it, I have a system that functions and I can use it. But the work will continue as it has done before and the people concerned will no doubt publish their results when the time is right.

But to me there are two sides to this, those who lead and those who follow and it is the majority who follow.

My point is different: even more, since he has few posts, why should you point finger to others when your own contribution to the site is zero? :)

I can say that everybody is stupid because their letting the whales to die, BUT I don't do anything to help them, either.

I agree with the fact that most of us are sitting like puppies waiting for food, I've realised that few weeks ago when I've tried to understand why dual core AMD CPUs are stuttering and I've come up with a partial solution, BUT I didn't start to blame the others that they are not doing anything.

Actually that was my point :)

Good point actually :)

If've been here not so long as the seniors and a lot of others but whenever I see a question I maybe can help with (as I also had the problem in one or the other way) at least I'm trying to do so...

Now if someone could give a "step-by-step how to compile code and kexts" guide for Os X I'd also like to start messing with that ;)

Is there such a guide available here in the forums or elsewhere explaining the tools we need for that and then how to use these???

E.g. on BeOS you have a .proj file: double-clicking on it opens up the c modules in edit and a simple compile will do the rest...

True, but I can forgive n00bs for not helping much since they're, well, n00bs. It's the people who have been here for over a month or so that have no excuse. :)

I am completely in over my head regarding EFI and the Intel boot image on the restore disc. I know that it semi-boots on my Mini, but genuine Apple computers don't have a BIOS like x86 systems, so as far as I know, the Mini has its own sort-of or exactly EFI component in it.

Decompiling C is another thing I have no idea how you make heads or tails of it. Even if I could extract the EFI from this DVD, I have no idea what to do with it, other than break EULA and send it off :) Just downloading it off the DVD probably qualifies as a form of reverse engineering...

Since I cannot fully boot this DVD, I'm at a loss as to what and how to fix it for generic PC use. I seem to have a lower brainwave level than Maxxuss in this regard. :(

I do know how I got Maxxuss patches ISO image of 1111a working on my mom's Gateway, so I've added what knowledge I have regarding compatibility to the Wiki. As I learn more, I'll edit more of the Wiki. ;)

I guess my main point is my contributions aren't 100% on this forum :)

Hmmm... I think I got the message :(

Ok then: is there such a thing as "How to compile on Mac Os X for dummies"?

And before starting any possible other wars: the "dummy" in this case is ME :hysterical:

Are you asking how to compile Mac OS X or how to compile in Mac OS X? For the first one try compiling Darwin and for the later use Xcode.

Someone posted this link, I think Wesley or JaS but don't remember, and it looks like a good place to start, not really for dummys so i haven't dived in yet but it doesnt look like it will be that hard.

I havent been here for long, the main purpose of this thread was to determine what mac os newbs like me can do to help not to start a blame game so lets see some ideas guys, is there a faq that would be particularly handy? is there something that needs testing? There must be a hundred useful things we can do rather than sitting on our asses waiting for maxxus to come charging up on his white stallion! Lets get a list together.

sig you're right I havent contributed much thats what this thread is about, it's about how all of us can contribute. Hunting around in the opinion threads looking for a good place to start a flame war isnt much of a contribution :sorcerer:

Moving ever so slightly off-topic here but I wanted to applaud the people who actually bother to recognise the hard work that others put into helping them. Many times a n00b registers, asks a question, gets a bunch of replies and then just vanishes, or pops up somewhere else with another question. It's like they don't appreciate that a lot of effort has gone into helping them. Hey, I've personally spent hours posting and PM'ing hapless users through some installation issue. I know that's my choice, but I really like it when someone bothers to say thanks. It's almost as good when someone bothers to respond and say my suggestions didn't work, or whatever, because I can add that to the knowledge pool.

Have you ever wondered where some of our more technical members have gone? I'm talking about those folks who used to post every day but seem to post only infrequently now? I can tell you - we have lost several good people, and almost lost several more, because of the total lack of gratitude for the effort they've put in. Think about it. Give as well as take.
