Hi All,

I own a dual 1,8 PowerMAC G5 and my production workflow would need more power...

having not enough €€ to buy the new (really nice:) MacPro I'm evaluating to build my own

"custom mac" using your precious infos in this great community.

I've chosen this components:

MB: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4

CPU: Q6600

VIDEO: 8600GT

RAM: 2x1GB 1066

I'd use this with:

MOTU828 MkII firewire Audio Interface

Logic 7/8, Cubase, etc..

UAD-1 (not sure if PCI one will work)

Some MIDI controllers

And here the big dubt:

Is this a good compatible configuration?

It will work like a charm as well as my G5 or I'll have problems, Kernel Panics and so on?

NO Problem if I have to work for first time installation but after that it will work as stable as a "real" mac?

Thanks for your support

Finally I have selected three motherboards that seems to be ones of most compatibles for 10.5.1:

ASUS P5W DH - Intel 975X Express Chipset

Gigabyte P35 DS4 - Intel P35 + ICH9 Chipset

Intel D975XBX2KR (BadAxe2) Intel 975X + ICH7 Chipset

Which one do you think is the best for a rock stable system?

and... excuse me for insistence, after all the tweaks, is a system like this as stable as my old G5 ?

I'm very tempted to replace my powermac with the homebrew one :-)

As long as you choose a mobo that's been known to have really good compatibility, then you should have little stability issues. Plus you'll see how much faster the new Core 2 Intels are vs. the old G5s. :P

Logic 8 has proven to be extremely stable running leopoard vanilla kernel, not a single hitch in over a month of heavy use, lots of plugs, high track counts and some seriously large sample streaming (VSL/Scarbee's etc). I'm using MOTU 2408mkIII and stock drivers from MOTU work straight off the bat, I expect the pci-324 will be no different

The question about the board all depends on what YOU want and how much post installation work you're prepared to do really, because stability as such isn't an issue with any of your choices, just read the various threads on the board to see the success rate and driver (kext) patches for each motherboard which interests you to confirm, know what you're taking on in each case plus you need to make your choice based on your requirements of ports/no. of drives etc. and of course price

if you want maximum performance with the Q6600 CPU (and future 45nm) then the badaxe isn't the best choice, the badaxe offered near out of the box compatibility with OSX distributions (very little kext editing) and is therefore harped on about a lot, but it's chipset is older now with the introduction of P35 boards, most of which also give near out of the box compatibility for less money... personally I got the Abit-IP35 (Darkraider not the E or Pro, although it is closer to the Pro in terms of sata/ide) and have only had to patch network as I don't use on board audio.. of course.. and neither will you) that took about 2 mins and the info is readily available on this site via a quick search as it is for most of the newer generation mobo's. btw I'm using iAtkos, though kalyway or EFI+Retail are all reported to work without much trouble.

That's great. Thanks... It seems that these build solutions are definitely usable...Happy to assume that MOTU drivers are Ok with the machine. I'm really curious if my PCI (not PCIe) will work (very unlikely)Absolutelty no problems to do some tweaks at first installation... so resuming: I'm probably going to P35 boards (I suppose the GA-P35 DS4 is ok) and the Q6600... After had a look in some posts here, I would change the video board with another more tested... I'll catch my eye on the wiki to do the right decision...Thanks for the support!! I'll let you know :-)

Hope I will turn off my old G5 and enjoy with the new Core 2 Quad with no remorse :-)

Just checked and 324 doesn't have drivers for leopard, you're going to need a PCI-X 424 (PCI might work but I can defo say my PCI-X does)

If you just went with say an Nvidia 7600 if you don't really require intensive 3d graphics it's one less thing to think about as far as compatibility.

Why not use your G5 for PPC plugins via RAX with the OS integrated AU netsend plugin and network coremidi?

yeah, the PPC one could be a nice solution for only PPC working plugs as Waves for example... For the rest

I have quite the most of plugs in UB...

about MOTU, I haven't a 424 but a 828MkII that is firewire bussed ... Do you think that firewire bus will give me troubles?

Thanks for the 7600 tip... could be the graphic solution..

Hi I am looking to get my 2048MkIII up and running in OS X. I have downloaded the drivers and installed. I have sound yet it doesnt show up in my system. I have midi in yet no midi out as soon as I record after 2 seconds error syncing midi & audio with external device pops up. I have just about greyed my hair completely trying to find out the solution... What I am I doing wrong with the set up the card to Logic?
