JawsThemeSwimming428 Posted February 3, 2008 Share Posted February 3, 2008 I am having a few issues installing Kalyway Leopard 10.5.1 on my Velocity Micro ProMagix system. It has been determined from this post, http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry607091, that I either need to get a IDE to SATA adapter or a SATA DVD drive. I found a SATA DVD Drive on newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106095) that is relatively cheap. I also found this one which isn't too expensive either (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106072) and it is a burner. I was wondering if anyone is using these drives and/or knows about any reason either of them might prove to be an issue. I would like to purcahse the burner but I want to know if there are any issues that anyone knows of first. I am looking for advice and guidance because I am very new to OSx86 and anything Mac related in general. Thanks for your help!Also, if I purchase one of these drives, I plan on installing it on my system while leaving the IDE DVD Burner I currently have intact. They should work I have a 212D by Pioneer that works well for leaving the IDE in when I had a IDE harddrive connected powered on not in use to my spare machine it would kernel panic under high load disconnecting the power stopped the panics so it may be something to look at if it happens to you. Well that I really have no clue about never used vista although if you already have installed onto a SATA controller connected hard drive then I can't see it making any difference after all, all it would be doing is seeing the burner on the sata bus instead of ide now. ninetto Posted February 3, 2008 Share Posted February 3, 2008 @ Jawsthemeswimmin.... just a quick note that I was exactly in your position a few days ago, since I had only an IDE-dvd-drive to install from and would get that dreaded "no plist.com" ... no way to boot from the dvd... etc. I also was about to buy a SATA dvd-drive - they ARE cheap - but I just felt this problem must be solveable, since Leopard DOES recognize IDE devices after install. Well I managed to solve it.... I cannot tell you exactly which part of the trick worked but I did the following: in BIOS changed my IDE controller to IDE (not ACHI not RAID) activated S.M.A.R.T checked boot order (CDrom first) no-execute memory check = enabled Disabled parralel port Then I removed my IDE hard-drive temporarily from the controller, leaving ONLY the dvd-drive on IDE, set "master". I was able to boot from the kaly install dvd and installed successfully to my SATA hard-drive. Maybe it is worth a last try? Otherwise, the SATA dvd-drive/burner I was about to buy was the Samsung SH-S203B which got rave reviews at THIS link.... good luck, ninetto Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

After that, if you feel unconfortable, then set the BIOS back the way it was. All my IDE devices work in OSX. Is your Vista install on IDE or SATA. If you are installing both OSX and Vista on the same disk, I assume you know about dual boot and what your are doing? Do you know of a good guide for how to do that? Try THIS starting with part 2... or the genius bar has other guides. Very useful is to have some boot disk that allows you to alter partitions... either a Linux CD or I heartily recommend Acronis Disk Manager. Oh two other tips: your Sata drive should be in the 1st port of your controller ports and DO NOT name the Leo install partition with spaces in the name. JawsThemeSwimming428 Posted February 4, 2008 Author Share Posted February 4, 2008 ninetto, I tried what you suggested about altering those items in BIOS: S.M.A.R.T. was enabled I couldn't find the IDE controller setting but my SATA controller w as set to IDE mode CD/DVD was set to first boot device I couldn't find anywhere to disable a parallel port And couldn't find no-execute memory check = enabled Any idea if there are any other names the items I couldn't find would be under? ninetto Posted February 4, 2008 Share Posted February 4, 2008 OKAY slowly but very surely this thread has diverted from your original theme, but I guess I am partly to blame so I'll try my best: I do not know which motherboard you have. If you have both IDE and SATA drives in your machine, surely you have more than one controller? Leave the Sata drive controller to its native (SATA) mode. Unless it is the only controller, then changing to IDE mode just might work. It is the IDE controller that is causing all the install problems, and my suggestion related to how I suddenly got this controller (JMicron) to act in a way that the OSX installer accepted. If you have only one controller, I really don't know if my trick will work for you... and in the end the $25 for a Sata-dvd-burner might well be worth the investment. AS I said, after my OSX install the JMicron IDE-controller worked perfectly so I could use my IDE-Dvd-burner with not problems. So you could afterwards re-sell your brand-new Sata-dvd-drive to a friend... ! As far as I can tell the problem you are having SHOULD be able to be cured by juggling your BIOS settings... but I cannot see them here and can't really help further, I'm afraid... good luck, ninetto Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think it's cause my drive isn't reading the DVD right. Is this caused because the drive is not connected to the motherboard by SATA? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Did you connect it to the SATA 2 port using a SATA wire? I'm not sure if mine is connected right, anyone got a picture of how its supposed to be connected?
