Recommended Firewire PCI card

Hello all,

I'm having some inconsistent problems with my external audio box, which is currently hooked up to a card with Lucent chipset. OSX recognises it and most functionality is fine, but once I try some core audio stuff I'm getting random crashes.

After some searching it seems that PCI cards based around the Texas Instruments chips are working well. Can anyone recommend some model numbers of products?

One local supplier has the Belkin F5U502 available, but they can't tell me if it's got the TI chipset.

All sugestions welcome!

Best

David

Well a couple of options for you if you have a Audigy sound card laying around with firewire port or if you can find a Dynex 3 port card or even one with the chipset by Agere L-FW323-06 on the chip then they both work perfectly for me. I'm only coping data back and forth to my external drives mind you but that has to use as much of the bandwith as sound is ever going too.

@MacUSer2552:

Thanks for the reply. However, what I'm looking for is anyone's experience with different firewire chipsets and high end external audio interfaces. Moving files around is a bit different to transferring 10 channels of 24/96 audio in realtime with no drop outs!

@all:

So, to reitterate. I have an external FW high end audio interface (I'm not mentioning which one yet on purpose, long story!) running 10.4.9 and I having problems with the coreaudio functions. I can record a 6 channel stream of 24/96 audio, but when I stop recording, Logic loses all communication with the interface. The only way to get around this is to power the external interface on and off. I've done some digging around and most high end audio manufacturers recommend FW interfaces running on Texas Instruments chip sets. My current PCI FW card is a Lucent chipset.

My question is:

does anyone have experience with different FW chip sets in OSX86. If so, which one's have you had any success with?

TIA for any comments

ps the reson I'm not mentioning the inteeface yet is that I don't want to give the impression it may work until I can get this final possible reason for problems ironed out..... but if it works I'm pretty sure I'm the first to have this box talking to OSX86 :unsure:

Sorry I can´t say what chip my pci fw card has (it´s a Sandberg) it does´nt say in the specs or at their site not that I can find anyway. But I had some problems to (Leo 10.5.1 Saffire Pro 10 I/O) could playback round 80 tracks but recording did not work good at all. I decided to go wild in the extensions folder and delete all kexts saying FW and the isight and ipod and then put them back one at a time everyone exept isight and ipod. Seems to have fixed it for me I´m just having some small probs left probably cause of my mobo and rest of the gear (Asusp4p800se P4 3 Ghz) not being 100% fully compatible. Found an article talking about fw problems where they´re talking about this gonna post it/edit it to this post in a just a sec.

So there you go hope this helps some

I have weird electical noises coming from this Presonus Inspire FW audio interface. Every few seconds it bursts a distorted sound.

I thought it was the FW port from my Audigy 2 ZS so I bought another mobo, ASUS A8N SLI which comes with a TI FW chipset that seems to work for most.

I had the same electrical noises though. This only happens when using my guitar plugged into the hi-z ports. When I'm using normal playback (samples etc) output is fine. Latency doesn't seem to affect this btw.

Mind you, I do not experience this in XP nor Vista so it's either Leopard, Logic or me using a hack although my friend who has the same board said he did not have any probs at all.

So now I'm stuck with this Presonus box, thinking about buying an EMU USB or new POD X3, bah, I've been looking for a solution for a looong time now. Always something interfering or not working properly.

Any ideas lads?

Thx

I had the same problems with my Phonic firefly 302 and Saffire Pro 10 i/o in kaly 10.4.10, in kaly leo 10.5.1 I managed to reduce that to the sound just dropping out from time to time but I get it also in playback on both. I´ve been trying two pci FW cards no Belkin though, no specs avaliable for non of them regarding chipset etc. I´m afraid. My gear also works ok in XP so it has to be something within the hack os and I think it has something to do with the PCI latency timer regarding the videocard and the fw card.

My guess is that the guys here that has mobos and the rest of the gear said to be working ok does´nt record wav using FW cards probably USB. Who knows maby the do not record wav audio (vox gits bas etc.) at all cause it´s really hard to get any answers on how many tracks they can record simultaniously etc.

My gear

Crappy old Asus p4p800se

P4 CPU 3 Ghz

geforce 6200 agp

etc etc.
