UPDATE for solution:

Make a new "Run Shell Script" with Automator, by entering the following:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airport -s (lists the SSIDs of all the networks)

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airport -aX (where X is the SSID of the network you want to connect to).

Save this file as an Application, and add it to the Startup items on the Accounts of System Preferences.

Every time you startup OSX it will execute this script and successfully connect to the network of preference, neat?

I've got LinkSys WMP54G V2 wireless PCI card, and I cannot find a consistent solution. The first time I install 10.4.9 the card is recognized and actually finds my Wireless Router, so it actually works. On the second reboot of the system, the status is "AirPort: Not Configured" and that's all I get...

Device ID: 0x4320

On the System Profiler it just sais that my AirPort is turned off.

I tried installing Ralink's latest 2500 chipset drivers with no luck.

Any help is welcome, thanks!

I have a similar issue. I am using a Dynex DX-BNBC with a BCM4318 chipset inside of it.

If I use the Airport utility, it finds nothing. I click on the Airport icon at the top, Airport: Not Configured. If I go to network preferences, click "Assist Me..." and go through the motions, it finds my router and allows me to enter the password. However, next screen it says "cannot connect to internet." So, I close the assistant window and look at network preferences... Connected, with an assigned IP address. All is good. :)

If I go to system profiler, then down to Airport card, it says "AirPort is currently turned off" when I am clearly connected. :P

Still quite odd that Airport is not seeing it correctly. :(

I'm having similar problems. I have the same card with osx 10.4.3 and I can't get it to recognize at all. I can however get my mn-520 (microsoft) to tell me everything about it except it wont do jack {censored} with it. It wont place it in the airport network, but it knows it by detailed name and vendor... censored.gif

I'd really love to hear again, in more detail, how you pulled this off.

I have this particular card Version 2 and while my QS can see it (running 10.4.11)and activate Airport, it will not allow Airport to connect to my network. Could that be because I turned off WEP in order to update a few other computers?

I tried the Automator trick, but it kept telling me that my script failed, so I must not be doing it right. I confess that I don't do shell commands very often, so I'm either messing it up, or there is something elase going on.

Anyhow, thanks for the posts so far. They look very helpful.

I have this same card and am using 10.5.5 with boot 132 method. I can see my network but when I try to connect it immediatly says connection failed. I tried the script and it seems todo nothing. Any ideas? I am using wpa2 personal, but I also tried wpa, and wep and none seem to work :)
