Juurlo Posted January 31, 2006 Share Posted January 31, 2006 If there's already a thread for this, I didn't find it Is there a way to PERMANENTLY enable Quartz Extreme 2D and disable beam sync on OSX86 10.4.3? The only way I know of is by using Quartzdebug. Also, if there's a reason why these features shouldn't be permanently changed, I'd like to know. The reason I'm asking is that I get a XBench 1.2 score of over 115 with the features switched, and under 85 when not... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

ccihon Posted February 1, 2006 Share Posted February 1, 2006 While making these changes can result in a major difference in Xbench, don't get too hung up on them......my tests with real world apps show a system with beam synch disabled is not reallly faster. In fact, it makes me question the validity of Xbench tests, at least on PC. Too much weight is given to screen redraws maybe? Also, beam synch helps to smooth video windows, etc, and prevent "tearing" when moving windows. Obviously, beam synch disable can't improve processor speed, etc. As for the Quartz 2D, I've tried it with mt Intel GMA900 graphics and it's quite buggy. I've been experimenting with my setup a little, and it seems that disabling beam sync has no real-world effects on anything - the only difference is "tearing" and some bugs in DVD playback. It seems that there is no other reason to disable beam sync than getting impressive XBench results... I've been unable to find any bugs with Quartz 2d, it seems to work just fine and it does make the GUI a little faster. I've got GMA 950 graphics and 10.4.3 system. jbjonas Posted February 20, 2006 Share Posted February 20, 2006 A very simple way to permanently set these is the following: Open the /Developer/Applications/Performance Tools/Quartz Debug.app (install from the DVD if you haven't yet) After you make the changes you want. >>Go to Apple menu>Force Quit, and Force the Quartz Debug.app to quit, instead of quitting it the nice way. This keeps the settings you made, and not just when Quartz Debug is open. I think this also keeps settings across restarts? Anyone sure about that?
