"screen" for X11 Does such a thing exist?

Most people here will be familiar with screen, which allows you to run cli apps and disconnect the terminal, only to reconnect later & have the app running in the meantime..

Is there any way to do this with GUI X11 apps? I run X11 apps from my slackware box by ssh'ing in with the -X switch & launching the apps from the command line, thus getting the app displayed on my OS X desktop. What I want to do is run such programs, and be able to disconnect them and shut off my os x machine overnight, only to reconnect to them next day and carry on where I left off, with the app running "headless" all night.

anyone know if this is possible, and if so how?

Thanks, I was going to update this, after finding this page, which lists xmove as well as xmx & guievict.

I wasn't aware that xmove was available in ubuntu though, most of what I've found seems fairly old & dusty, and only partly suited to the task. I'm also having difficulty finding a valid homepage for it, it seems like it's orphaned or unmaintained?

as I understand it, these work by setting up a virtual root window and allowing you to connect & disconnect from that.

Any personal experiences with this would be invaluable.

It's not exactly screen for X, but if you install Xvnc (the X VNC server) it can start a virtual X server which, instead of displaying on screen, is displayed to clients that connect via VNC. If you disconnect your VNC client, the virtual X server will keep running, and so will any X clients using it. Then you can reconnect with a VNC client later and resume whatever you left running. It's what I use for leaving X programs (KTorrent) running on my home server.
