[Howto] Use a Wiimote to control Front Row

You'll need Bluetooth and a Wiimote for this mod. If you don't have Bluetooth in your system already, just get a USB Bluetooth adapter.

D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth USB Adapter ($30)

Nintendo Wii Remote ($40)

Next you'll need the free DarwiinRemote software:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/darwiin-remote/

The quickest way to pair it is to:

1. Hit the Sync button on the rear of the Wiimote (under the battery cover)

2. Press the "Find Wiimote" in the Darwiin software

3. Press the "1" and "2" buttons on the Wiimote at the same time (this will sync your Wiimote to your Hackintosh)

The keymap list is available here: (scroll down)

You can change the keymapping in the preferences of Darwiin. I made a few changes to make Front Row easier to use. The Wiimote makes a really great remote because it doesn't require line-of-site like the IR Apple Remote does and you can custom-map the buttons however you want, plus it has pretty good range so you can listen to music and not be near your computer. Here's an interesting YouTube tutorial that adds in motion functionality: (wireless Wii bars are available, see eBay or DealXtreme)

There are other Wii programs available, but I like Darwiin because of its simplicity. It makes a great Front Row remote!

Wow! :) Wasn't it Christmas just a few days ago? More great bulletproof guides from weaksauce! I Love this one!

In a few hours i will walk down the road to our local reseller and buy a WIImote. I think nearly any BT 2.0 USB-Stick will do, mine is a blue MSI for about 9 euros! Works great! Put in and forget, it just works (Sorry VISTA-Folks, you have to search for a driver..[oh, its in the enclosed CD]).

Thanks!

Yeah - sounds great, I'm gonna try this. I already have a wii with a couple of remotes. I'm currently (yes as I write) building my new quad core hackintosh, so my G4 mac mini (which I'm using now) will probably get repurposed as a file/ftp/web/mail and front row machine. If this works well it will save me buying an IR dongle...

Instead of spending $30 I reccomend spending 9.99 on this:

cirago BTA-3160

I tested it and works perfect out of the box on my Hack Pro. On New Egg does not mention OSX support but on the actual box that I received does:
