so what fan have you used that works well and not too noisey casue i sleep in the same room as my computer.

and max prive around $50 but can go a little higher if i must

The Tuniq Tower 120 is a nice cooler, although the base of mine would have benefitted from lapping. It is rather heavy, so it's not good for portability. It also doesn't blow onto the motherboard stuff surrounding the CPU, so you need to have another fan. The Tuniq keeps a CPU very cool if used correctly. I have a fan in the center of the Tuniq Tower and it blows to exhaust fan in the back of the case. The 120 inch fans make little noise and are effective.

If you want a low cost option go for a Scythe Ninja Plus Rev. B or a Thermaltake CL-P0114 Big Typhoon. Both can be found for around $50 and should provide adequate cooling for overclocking.

Thanks pcwiz! I'm going to get the Thermaltake you suggested, it looks like it is very good from newegg reviews and it also blows on the motherboard which was a deciding factor from other good ones. Hopefully it doesn't tare a whole in my mobo for being so heavy and huge! One thing that I don't like about it so far is it is freaking ugly! But you can't be picky I guess!

Under compatibility it doesnt have quadcore listed, but I'm going to assume it will work anyway.

Intel P4 LGA775

P4 478 Prescott FMB1.5

AMD Athlon 64 / Athlon 64 FX

Athlon XP up to 3400+

Sempron up to 3400+

Oh im still very much considering.

Im just getting my build together.

my case comes with 2 120 mm fans in it so im guessing that will help a lot with the cooling.

also i was wondering how do you go about over clocking?

BIOS or is there a program?

and what programs will i need to monitor my CPU to

tell if it is running stable

Good final words from PCWIZ!

Actually though, the multiplier on the Q6600 is locked (well, you can reduce the multiplier but I imagine you want to go higher) - overclocking can be achieved by increasing the frequency of the FSB.

For example, with my setup, the E4300 has a 9 times multiplier. It runs at FSB 800MHz which means the stock clock speed is 9 x 200 MHz (a quarter of the FSB) = 1800 (or 1.8GHz). If I increase the frequency from 200MHz to 300MHz then the clock speed will increase to 9 x 300 = 2700 (2.7GHz).

The problem with overclocking like this though is that it also lifts the frequency at which your RAM is running so you may want to underclock your RAM to compensate and/or get RAM which is rated for higher speeds e.g. 800MHz or 1000MHz. While talking specifically about the Badaxe2, this site has some good general information about overclocking:

And this is a really usefull tool to work out memory frequencies based on your desired FSB overclock:

In terms of monitoring temps, I don't have the luxury of a Windows partition so I use Marcel Bresink's temperature monitor to make sure nothing is getting too hot. For performance/stability I use Xbench and Geekbench for quick tests and Handbrake (DVD to AVI transcoding) which gives you a high CPU utilisation for a sustained period.

Oh, and in terms of air cooling - I should add that I'm currently running at 3.0GHz using a Zalman CNPS8000 cooler. It is pretty basic but is keeping things cool at it's lowest setting. Idle's at around 38 degrees C and gets to around 55 degrees C under load.

I've a Scythe 'Andy Samurai Master' waiting to be installed but I haven't got around to it yet. I chose this model because of the low fan speed, low noise and the fact that it blows down, providing additional cooling to mosfets etc. I also chose it because of the cool name!

Once I've got 'Andy' installed, I may well take it to 3.2GHz. The E4300 really is excellent value for money. :(

WOW so many Fans idk which to pick!!

i liked the Thermaltake V1!

im thinking of going with that

so when i do overclock my q6600 i should slowly overclock it and see how it is doing, then when i have it as high as i can go and as stable keep it there and monitor it fro awhile?

so then with a cpu fan and 2 120 mm case fans should i be good to go???

also i have a 8600 GTS video card so thats a lot more heat too

I assume you mean you need the cooler to?

Thermalright 120 Extreme is the best air cooler available, couple it with a 120mm fan an your good. i've got a Scythe 120mm 110CFM fan and it is almost silent up to 70%[1700RPM] of it's max speed [2000RPM]

so with one of those great cpu fans and two 120 mm case fans i should be fine??

and my case has room for like seven fans i think i saw but idk could be mistaken too!!!!!
