gabrigee Posted December 28, 2007 Share Posted December 28, 2007 Download the second life client from here: http://secondlife.com/community/downloads.php Whenever I try to execute it, it crash at startup. It was working with my previous flat-image Leopard install.... I'm really wondering why. PS. I'm not using second life to play or anything, it is just like a way to check if my leopard has any problem with graphics or other things... DA360 Posted January 24, 2008 Share Posted January 24, 2008 I'm a first time poster but a long-time browser of this site. I've also have not been able to launch Second Life (any version of the viewer, including OnRes) under Kalyway 10.5.1. The crash report is saying "Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFData _getCString:maxLength:encoding:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x40ce7a0'". Was there a library or KEXT that Kalyway might of altered or removed that it is trying to call? I know other 3D apps and games work just fine on my install (I've also tested the Mac version of Age of Empires 3 and that works perfectly). I've also noticed that after it crashes, it has a strange side-effect of making the genie-effect is not as smooth as it should be. I'm using a GeForce 8800GT with the 10.5.2 KEXTs (from the blog post installer). I know there's known issues with 10.5.2 and Second Life but the game should atleast start up so I could atleast test to see if it runs and if so, how it runs under my OS X install. Here's my full crash report from Second Life: Process: Second Life [239] Path: /Applications/Second Life WindLight.app/Contents/MacOS/Second Life Identifier: com.secondlife.indra.viewer Version: Second Life version 1.18.6.77495 (1.18.6.77495) Code Type: X86 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [92] Date/Time: 2008-01-24 12:54:15.715 +0000 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B18) Report Version: 6 Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Application Specific Information: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFData _getCString:maxLength:encoding:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x40ce7a0' Thread 0 Crashed: 0 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x95864114 ___TERMINATING_DUE_TO_UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION___ + 4 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x956a109b objc_exception_throw + 40 2 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x9586b46a -[NSObject doesNotRecognizeSelector:] + 186 3 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x95869a6c ___forwarding___ + 892 4 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x95869b32 _CF_forwarding_prep_0 + 50 5 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x95803400 CFStringGetCString + 896 6 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x00879d36 LLAppViewerMacOSX::generateSerialNumber() + 176 7 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x00875356 LLAppViewer::init() + 3816 8 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x00878ab3 LLAppViewerMacOSX::init() + 17 9 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x00879564 main + 296 10 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x000029ea _start + 216 11 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x00002911 start + 41 Thread 1: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b10a06 mach_wait_until + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b87abf nanosleep + 314 2 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x008dcd59 ms_sleep(long) + 87 3 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009fbd0e LLErrorThread::run() + 614 4 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091ac3e LLThread::staticRun(apr_thread_t*, void*) + 32 5 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009f9599 dummy_worker + 22 6 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b41075 _pthread_start + 321 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b40f32 thread_start + 34 Thread 2: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b1092e semaphore_wait_signal_trap + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b421e6 _pthread_cond_wait + 1267 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b87c4b pthread_cond_wait + 48 3 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091afe2 LLThread::checkPause() + 86 4 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009413ac LLQueuedThread::run() + 28 5 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091ac3e LLThread::staticRun(apr_thread_t*, void*) + 32 6 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009f9599 dummy_worker + 22 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b41075 _pthread_start + 321 8 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b40f32 thread_start + 34 Thread 3: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b1092e semaphore_wait_signal_trap + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b421e6 _pthread_cond_wait + 1267 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b87c4b pthread_cond_wait + 48 3 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091afe2 LLThread::checkPause() + 86 4 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009413ac LLQueuedThread::run() + 28 5 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091ac3e LLThread::staticRun(apr_thread_t*, void*) + 32 6 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009f9599 dummy_worker + 22 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b41075 _pthread_start + 321 8 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b40f32 thread_start + 34 Thread 4: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b1092e semaphore_wait_signal_trap + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b421e6 _pthread_cond_wait + 1267 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b87c4b pthread_cond_wait + 48 3 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091afe2 LLThread::checkPause() + 86 4 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009413ac LLQueuedThread::run() + 28 5 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091ac3e LLThread::staticRun(apr_thread_t*, void*) + 32 6 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009f9599 dummy_worker + 22 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b41075 _pthread_start + 321 8 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b40f32 thread_start + 34 Thread 5: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b1092e semaphore_wait_signal_trap + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b421e6 _pthread_cond_wait + 1267 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b87c4b pthread_cond_wait + 48 3 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091afe2 LLThread::checkPause() + 86 4 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009413ac LLQueuedThread::run() + 28 5 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x0091ac3e LLThread::staticRun(apr_thread_t*, void*) + 32 6 com.secondlife.indra.viewer 0x009f9599 dummy_worker + 22 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b41075 _pthread_start + 321 8 libSystem.B.dylib 0x94b40f32 thread_start + 34 Thread 0 crashed with X86 Thread State (32-bit): eax: 0xa07b60f0 ebx: 0x956a107c ecx: 0xa07b51a0 edx: 0x03faa000 edi: 0xa0030f00 esi: 0x040ce7a0 ebp: 0xbffff378 esp: 0xbffff378 ss: 0x0000001f efl: 0x00000286 eip: 0x95864114 cs: 0x00000017 ds: 0x0000001f es: 0x0000001f fs: 0x00000000 gs: 0x00000037 cr2: 0x2e823000 Binary Images: 0x1000 - 0x1689fdf +com.secondlife.indra.viewer Second Life version 1.18.6.77495 (1.18.6.77495) <8cca4b3622a84eeba5c3a076aeb7dccb> /Applications/Second Life WindLight.app/Contents/MacOS/Second Life 0x2eda000 - 0x2edaffd libmx.A.dylib ??? Cloudane Posted January 25, 2008 Share Posted January 25, 2008 Since my reply, I've also tried TuxRacer and Flightgear, both do the same thing.... just bomb out on launch. Must be something to do with graphics, but my card is recognised correctly and says it supports core hardware acceleration, quartz extreme etc etc and the xbench openGL test works so I'm at a loss really Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
gabrigee Posted January 25, 2008 Author Share Posted January 25, 2008 Yes it is still not working. Im really wondering if there are issues with kalyway since it was working with a previous install. Another freeware OpenGL game you cant test with: It's called Argonaut 2149 , a cool game too http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13225 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
JSn1™ Posted January 27, 2008 Share Posted January 27, 2008 Sorry, I don't have a lot of experience o NVIDIAs for OSX86. However, have you tried using another installation DVD, maybe there is a driver issue with that specific game, nothing to really care. Like me, Age of Empires will run on Leopard with GMA950 and not with GMA X3100. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Flightgear loads fine for me although I don't know how to fly the plane. I think Secondlife has something in the application itself which is preventing it from running on Hackintosh's because if I set it to run off just software rendering without any graphics cards capabilities, it still crashes. -XpS- Posted February 22, 2008 Share Posted February 22, 2008 Download the second life client from here: http://secondlife.com/community/downloads.php Whenever I try to execute it, it crash at startup. It was working with my previous flat-image Leopard install.... I'm really wondering why. PS. I'm not using second life to play or anything, it is just like a way to check if my leopard has any problem with graphics or other things... I'm having the same problem. In fact on this same machine running tiger I could play second life with no problem, but since installing kalyway leopard 10.5.1 I crash with both the produciton and the release candidate clients. I have even updated to 10.5.2 and updated graphics as well and still no go. Its really upsetting to not be able to play sl on my osx rig with 6 gigs of ram, and an 8800gtx. I was looking forward to this and am really disapointed. Anyone have a solution for this? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Hyper X Posted February 22, 2008 Share Posted February 22, 2008 I am running Iatkos and have the same issue. I tried all 3 OSX clients *both first look and original* and all crash before they open. I am running a 7900GS on intel so I have NO IDEA what the issue is ;\ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
candide Posted February 24, 2008 Share Posted February 24, 2008 As pointed out by DA360 in this and the other thread, the problem is in SL's calling an apple function that returns some hardware serial number, and crashing there. I recompiled SL hardcoding a dummy value instead of the call and after that SL runs fine on my Kalyway 10.5.1 install Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

candide Posted February 24, 2008 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Is it complicated? Could you provide a manual to that? It's not complicated if you have at least some programming background (mostly to find your way around the developer tools). The short version is a) get apple's xcode3.0 from http://developer.apple.com/tools/download/ get the SL source files, artwork and libraries from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Source_downloads (I've used ver FL-1.19.0.80079 - http://secondlife.com/developers/opensourc...4-r80079.tar.gz http://secondlife.com/developers/opensourc...ht14-r80079.zip http://secondlife.com/developers/opensourc...4-r80079.tar.gz ) c) follow the instructions here http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Compiling_..._%28Mac_OS_X%29 on how to unpack the 3 archives and how to get/copy FMod library (don't do the Build step yet) d) start xcode and load the SL project as detailed on the wiki page above. you don't have to build libraries, set newview as the active target and deployment as the active build configuration. e) in xcode, navigate to the source code file llappviewer.cpp (if you have troubles using xcode just find the file using disk search and edit it with a plain text editor) f) in that file, find the line mSerialNumber = generateSerialNumber(); and replace it with mSerialNumber = "1234567890"; or something such, doesn't really matter what string you put in there. g) build the newview project (there's a build button or use the menu) h) wait until xcode finishes building - depending on the speed of your machine, this can take 10-15 minutes or more i) quit xcode, navigate to <whereever you put sl sources>/linden/indra/newview/build - the compiled SL app will be there j) if all goes well, enjoy running SL Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

DA360 Posted February 26, 2008 Share Posted February 26, 2008 Thanks, I might try doing that. But maybe for others that wouldn't want to go though all that, maybe you can put up the modified executable so people can just download it. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
candide Posted February 27, 2008 Share Posted February 27, 2008 Okay, I've uploaded a compiled binary on rapidshare that you can try but be aware that a) you're using a program someone on the internet gave you. it could steal your passwords, money, inventory, girlfriend and/or kill your cat. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. at least use an alt, not your main secondlife account this is the windlight edition of the secondlife client which is updated fairly frequently and while I believe the compiled clients have auto-updates turned off by default, you might not be able to use this version for long http://rapidshare.com/files/95344126/Secon...L80079.zip.html Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It has been an interesting development so far. Sadly, although SL now launches and works, it crashes when I access the menus (for example opening the friends screen). I even recompiled latest version of windlight with the same results. Could that happen to you as well? In my case I also need the nvidia8600 workaround so there's an additional layer of complexity. Frogking Posted March 2, 2008 Share Posted March 2, 2008 Thank you candide for a solution to a problem that has been bugging me for weeks! But... this begs the question, is there some way to patch the system so that it actually returns something when a software application tries to get the serial number in this way? Perhaps the PC EFI guys could look into this. I see this as potentially being the silver bullet that could wipe out the OSX86 community. What stops Apple from putting this code in every single upcoming software update? Last time I checked, they don't provide the source code to operating system updates... just sayin'. MK500 Posted March 9, 2008 Share Posted March 9, 2008 I'm having the same problem. Certain applications seem to test hardware at launch. As my test case, I'm trying to build a system where all three of these apps will launch without crashing: Newest Second Life Newest Dreamweaver Newest Parallels with Vista I've had at least one session where Second Life and Parallels both were working perfectly. I was actually installing Vista updates in one window while playing Second Life in another at full speed for an hour or more. At this moment, Dreamweaver and Parallels are working, but not Second Life. I'm trying to determine the culprit. Here is my build methodology so far: 1-Install Kalyway 10-5-1 no options 2-Install Kalyway 10-5-2 updater 3-Install NVInstaller 4-Install Leopard Graphics Update 5-Install NVInstaller again 6-Remove AppleHWSensor.kext (this stops the 2 minute freeze on OS boot) 7-Install Modified AppleSMBIOS (this seems to affect which apps will launch and which will not) 8-Install Audio Drivers 9-Install Ethernet Driver 10-Install tweaked Kernel 9-2-0 (since this is normal 10.5.2 kernel, but doesn't happen if you do the normal Kalyway build) I hate to go through a full re-install, but I may need to in order to figure out the point where Second Life and Parallels were both working. Understanding why certain apps are checking hardware at launch, and how we can allow this to work, is pretty critical for a stable hackintosh.
